Island Manapua (Aloha Manapua) in Manoa Marketplace is a long-standing local spot for takeout. The Peking duck manapua is the best, with good flavor, and the classic char siu manapua is the second best choice, though other buns have lackluster filling. The ginger fried chicken is a definite winner—surprisingly not heavy and greasy, with a good amount of scallions and ginger. The fried chicken ginger onion on rice is tasty, made with deboned chicken thighs covered in house green onion ginger sauce. Best steamed manapua and char siu chow fun on the island, plus brown rice cake, chrispy gaugee, and mochi balls. Chow fun is made fresh with a short wait. However, some find the food bland and not as tasty as before. Prices remain affordable, and the food and service are always filled with Aloha. A solid quick stop that has been there for many years, worth returning for specials.
