“This place is truly a gem. It is a rarity to find sushi this good in the US, nonetheless Des Moines. The bluefin toro (fatty tuna) is a true delicacy and is not easy to find even in much larger metros. It was delicious- we did both the nigiri and sashimi. The king salmon nigiri was also very tasty. It had a smoky flavor that was delicious. We also really enjoyed the fluke nigiri. The French onion soup was good, as was the sushi roll we had. The one “miss” was the mussels, as they were just a bit bland. The service was terrific, and the atmosphere is low key. Highly, highly recommend- this place is truly impressive.“

“I love sushi and I had been on many sushi places From San Francisco Ca, Guadalajara Jal and this one Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Des Moines IA and this one was special different and I loved it; Not only the food, the service was exceptional, the lady that helped me was amazing cause when she learned was my first time there she gave me edamame and the way the do it was a little different, I loved it; all the rolls were amazing but the one that I loved the most was the one with cucumber that I forgot the name, but was not all; honestly I could not finished all and she told me let me put this for you to go, OMG this beautiful lady packed my stuff really well even I got this lil plate for the soy sauce, so I really recommend this place to eat there or even to go, cause their service and the food is exceptional, and definitely if I am close I going to come again, thanks !!!!“

“Serious about allergies! I have an allergy so I can’t go out to eat much, which in itself is heartbreaking. However, from the moment I walked in the door, they were already preparing to make sure I could have a safe meal with my family. They took all the precautions they could and kept me informed the entire time. It nearly brought tears to my eyes! The kindness and thoughtfulness I experienced was so overwhelming so thank you to everyone who made my dinner possible! I’m so appreciative. We were a very large party, and even so, they succeeded! I called ahead and asked if we could bring in a cake, etc... they were MORE than accommodating. They said whatever we needed! They kept it a secret until we finished our dinner. Brought out the cake, lit the candles, provided extra plates, a knife to cut it and were SO kind. Thank you guys all SO much! My daughter was thrilled (and embarrassed). Excellent dinner too!“

“Over all, everything was good. The pieces of mackerel were gigantic, which I don’t mind, and the service was good - everything came out fairly quickly. My one gripe is I also ordered the volcano roll, which should have been krab, scallops, eel sauce and I think spicy mayo on top of a California roll, but either I was served the wrong thing or they just did not include the scallops and eel sauce on top. “We live in Kansas City and eat here at least once each year during holiday travels. Best Asian fusion restaurant within several states! It's so good and I have no idea how their menu is that huge. We absolutely love everything we get!“

“Cool Basil has been a long time favorite of my wife and I. We hadn’t been there in a while when we stopped in for lunch today. The atmosphere was noticeably different. They were playing a funky smooth jazz music where every song sounded the same. I liked the previous light/classic rock mix much better. The staff seems to have completely changed since we were last in. We didn’t recognize anyone, whereas we were on a first name basis with much of the previous staff. The service was noticeably slower and less friendly. The food was still very good. I ordered my usual spice level 2 and it was very, very hot. Much hotter than it used to be. I’m just wondering if they are under new ownership or management because it is a very different experience from a year ago. I still recommend Cool Basil, it’s just not the familiar place that we loved anymore.“

“Just went here for my bday dinner last night with family (was a little worried due to reading prior reviews) and all 7 of us had an excellent experience! Bar tender was friendly and did a great job, and the wait staff served happily and quickly. Chef did a great job and entertained and engaged us, while we had delicious food at the hibachi grill. It was a great outing!“
