Yesterday I took the Sourdough Breadmaking Class with Chef George at The Ancestral Oven and I just pulled an amazing loaf of bread out of my home oven 24 hours later! Chef George provided all the necessary instruction and supplies - including a lively starter - for students to start their own sourdough journey at home. The class included hands-on experience feeding the starter, as well as folding and shaping the dough. I had a great time at the class and can't wait to return to...read full review
We went there today for breakfast. The eating area was nothing special but it was clean and nice enough for us to dine there. The food was pretty good as well. The Ancestral Oven, Sourdough Bakery and Café is a wonderful bakery in Oak Lawn, IL, highly recommended for its absolutely amazing sourdough bread, considered the best by many. The cheddar jalapeño loaf is a standout, described as the best bread ever. Their breakfast sandwiches are phenomenal, with the jalapeño cheddar sandwich and the bacon, egg, and cheese on sourdough receiving particular praise; one is called the best in the area. The chorizo con pappas is also noted. The sandwiches feature flavorful, buttery sourdough, fresh herbs in the eggs, plenty of cheddar, and options like turkey bacon. The coffee is a perfect cup. They also offer a great sourdough baking class where the knowledgeable and patient chef provides all necessary supplies and a starter kit, leaving participants comfortable to bake at home. The Mexican chocolate cookies are awesome. The owner is a class act, always welcoming and appreciative of customers.
