“Fantastic experience with worldly cuisine that is so much fun to eat! Me and hubby checked this spot out for the first time while in Boston. The restaurant’s manager greeted us and our wonderful hostess seated us on the garden patio, which we reserved. The food and lovely outside were amazing! The Moroccan mint tea was amazing! The Mo-Mo’s were so yummy!! The fried trout and grits are an AMAZING combo!!“

“I got the Salmon Entree. I am definitely going to get it again. Beautifully cooked salmon. The fried rice and bok choy sides were a perfect match for that salmon with the glaze and sauce. Must try it. I also tried the Pot Roast Mac and Cheese. Omg if you need comfort food this is it. The Popovers are amazing also. Everything I tried was delicious. The Chicken Wings, Spice Bag both winners. I can’t wait to go back again. Our waiter was excellent. Such good service. Supporting wait staff excellent as well.“

“Huge selection of vegan breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods. Came with a large group and we had a feast. They have a vegan Reuben sandwich that was pretty decent. Their clam chowder was not as rich as I had hoped it would be—kinda thin and watery—but their pancakes were huge and delicious. Definitely would come again!“

“Today is the next day my wife is still raving about our dinners which were both delicious ( sorry to find the center of the lasagna was cool) our server was professional and friendly with great suggestions including a wonderful Bordeaux . Portions were generous will go back when in Boston again to try other wine, cheese, and dessert.

“Cafe Mami is a Japanese comfort food spot that focuses on simple, hearty dishes like curry rice, katsu, hamburg steak, and donburi-style meals. The space is fairly small and tucked away, with more of a functional, casual feel rather than a polished dining room. It’s the kind of place people go for a quick, filling meal rather than a long sit-down experience.
The standout here is definitely the Japanese curry and katsu combinations. The pork tonkatsu curry in particular is a go-to, with a thick, crispy cutlet served over rich curry sauce and rice. The portions are generous for the price, and the curry itself leans comforting and slightly sweet-savory in a way that feels very classic and approachable. The hamburg steak and oyakodon are also solid options if you want something different from fried cutlet dishes.
Service is fast and handled by a very small staff, so things move quickly once you order. Because of how busy it can get during peak hours and how limited the seating is, there’s often a bit of a rush feel to the experience. It works well as a quick lunch or casual dinner, but it’s not really a place you linger for long.
The seating situation is probably the biggest drawback. It fills up quickly, and the space feels tight, especially when there’s a line forming. That said, the turnover is fast enough that you usually don’t have to wait too long, even when it looks crowded from outside.
Overall, Cafe Mami is a reliable spot for Japanese comfort food in the Porter Square area. The value is strong, the portions are generous, and the curry dishes are consistently satisfying. It’s not fancy, but it does exactly what it’s meant to do well, which is serve quick, filling, and comforting Japanese meals.“

“I don’t know what spell they put on the rice and beans here but I blacked out mid-bite. The carne de res was juicy, flavorful, and dangerously good. This wasn’t lunch — this was a spiritual reset. I wiped the plate clean like it owed me money. Dominican comfort food done RIGHT. This is my second time here and I am for sure coming back.“

“saw this restaurant and it's james beard nominee chef on phantom gourmet, so when i drove up from the Cape to see my Uncle we decided to check it out… i grew up in the neighborhood so was neat to see the old hood! this place used to be a bakery, and has been transformed into a hip counter service option for breakfast/lunch, etc....sparkling clean, friendly counterperson, was my first impression...there is a nice window facing counter with stools to sit at and enjoy your selections...we both ordered the fish congee and i got the rice noodles with hoisin sauce and my uncle ordered the rice noodles with curry fish balls, and we ordered green tea...all the dishes were so yummy! i'm talking deliciousness every bite. i worked in chinatown for 17 years so im familiar with most of the dishes, its a good varied menu of the staples and the unexpected ...the congee was an appetizing and creative presentation with nuts and different colorful toppings for added flavor and esthetics ...had such a delicate fish flavor....we plan to return soon...want to try the french toast and also the rice with salt and pepper chicken...the bao selections look tempting as well! busy area but we found hancock street parking and saw spots on Billings Rd as well...highly recommend.“
