Detroit is certainly having a Renaissance, particularly down town. As you get out to the hinterlands, well maybe a little less. But a cities renaissance sometimes clear cuts iconic joints that no longer.....fit. Mikes has been on Michigan Ave for 50 years. I travel to this side of town a few times a year. When I do, it's always a treat to sit at the linoleum counter, have a ham sandwich and a coke and follow it up with a slab of cherry pie. The ham is sliced thick. A small nosh of ham is artfully tooth-picked to the top of the poppy-seeded bun. Be sure to order it with mustard, cheese and pickles!
