“Vivant Brewery & Spirits in Grand Rapids was a really enjoyable experience and easily one of the more distinctive brewery settings I have visited.
The atmosphere is what grabbed me first. The building was originally a funeral home chapel, and instead of trying to hide that history, they leaned into it. The stained glass above the bar is especially striking, and the exposed wood, high ceilings, and historic architecture give the space a sophisticated, almost European feel. It has a lot of character without feeling gimmicky.
We only stopped in for appetizers, but everything we tried was very tasty. Vivant is known for putting more effort into the food than the typical brewery, with a from-scratch menu and some more creative options than standard bar food. Their duck nachos, beer cheese and pretzels, frites, and poutine are some of the items that come up repeatedly with other guests.
The drink side is just as interesting. They focus heavily on European-inspired beers, but they also make spirits and offer craft cocktails, so there is quite a bit more variety than you get at a brewery that is strictly about beer.
What I liked most was the overall vibe. It feels a little more refined and sophisticated than the average taproom, but it is still comfortable and relaxed enough that you can just sit down, have a drink, share some food, and enjoy the building.
Great ambiance, very good food, an interesting drink selection, and one of the coolest historic interiors in Grand Rapids. Vivant took a building with a very unusual past and turned it into something that feels classy, memorable, and completely its own.“
