Smoked White Fish

“Don’t go to the other fish shop in this strip, stop here. We learned the hard way.We stopped at the other fish shops before making this our last one. It’s not as flashy as the other ones, but that’s what makes it so good. They can focus on making the fish dip and smokes fish way better than the other shops, rather than making the aesthetic match those vacationing here.My fiancé always stops here for Bret’s whitefish dip and buys extra for the 8 hour drive home and some for the weeks that we are not out here. They do take a vacation during the summer. You just need to call to see if they are open. One week we were up here and found out they were out for the week. Going into winter, they do close down for the season. I think it’s the owner, she is very kind and my fiancé just loves the whitefish dip she makes. Make sure to have cash. If I remember right, they don’t take card. It is a smaller business, so be kind and have patience!

Parking: Easy to find parking. You can park right out in front of the entrance!“

American Legion American • $$

“First time in an American Legion, because who can visit Munising without seeking out a Friday Fish Fry with locally caught, fresh white fish or lake trout. And whaaaaaat, they stock Bell’s Two Hearted IPA! Yeah, it feels like a forgotten church basement and smells like a 90 year old fryer basket. But the bartender/servers are incredibly kind and attentive (ours worked for the US Forestry Service by day), the fish is NOT TO BE MISSED, and the French fries are fantastic (think Minnesota State Fair). The coleslaw is thick and sweet. Not my jam but likely scooped out of a commercial container and simple for them to serve. If they dared, I would encourage them to make their own with little to no sugar and celery seeds + dill. The tartar sauce is scooped out of the adjacent commercial container and would also be amazing if freshly made and a bit innovative. The fries cannot be improved and are perfection. Another thought would be to serve the fries with from scratch gravy. But alas, this is the American Legion, so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!“
