“I drive past Poormans Restaurant every day going to work, and I rarely stop. This past Saturday, I decided to place a takeout order and was pleasantly surprised at how friendly the young lady was, who took my order. Restaurants and the food service industry in general have really been on the decline as far as customer service goes and the basics of just greeting the customers. So to my surprise, when I went in to pick up my order, the restaurant was very crowded and there was a long line to check out and again the couple of people working the register and prepping the food order were so friendly, so nice so patient. It was very refreshing to see good service for a change. The food is great. I left them a good tip in the jar and I will be back!“

“Down on Mainstreet is a busy place in Downtown Washington. You can enter from the street side of the parking lot side. I lucked out and did not have to wait for a table. They have inside, bar and some outside tables in the back. The atmosphere is casual. The menu has a lot of options but I went with the Steele Burger and fries as the side. My burger was cooked to order and I liked I could pick my cheese and toppings. It was good sized and tasted great. The prices were reasonable. Being so busy it is a noisy place. Service was very friendly and efficient.“

“I would give high ratings to the food. All our choices were delicious and the ambience and feel of the dining area was really nice. I had the catch of the day and the sauce was fantastic We arrived early, so our service experience was quite good though not stellar. As time went by the restaurant became more crowded, and since there was only two waiters, I would guess that later diners would not have had quite as good of service experience. Toward the end of our meal, the wait staff were on a practically a full run, and it took us a long time to get our bill. This is another establishment to present a bill with 20% tips minimum listed on the bottom, and the tip amount actually includes the tax which is getting to be very common. Apparently, we are now not only expected to pay 20% at least on the rising cost of food and overpriced libations but now we have to pay at least 20% on the taxes.“

The Hackney American • $$$
192 W Main St Suite A, Washington - 3.23 miles

“I live in Raleigh but like to visit Little Washington a few times a year. The Hackney has been on my "to-eat" list, and I finally made it there. I am so glad that I did. It is an Autumn approved restaurant. The historic building is beautiful & was restored very nicely. The space has great energy. I loved the music that they were playing & the big windows. The food was delish! I had the fish & chips. The tartare hollandaise was amazing. I am still thinking about it days later. For dessert, I had vanilla creme brulee which is one of my favorites. It was very well done. I had the New Year, New Mule cocktail to go with it. The cocktail was so tasty. I didn't think that I was really a gin fan, but I would totally order that drink again. After my meal, Chef Davis came out to ask me how everything was & chatted with me for a few minutes. That was classy & made my day. He is good people.I will definitely be going back to The Hackney for a second visit. I love supporting local establishments that excel at what they do. I will encourage others to visit as well.Parking: There is street parking right out front, or there is a parking lot a few blocks away. Both are free.Kid-friendliness: I love kids but wouldn't bring them here. This is a grown up experience.“

“We ate lunch at Grub Brothers today and this was our first visit here. I wasn't impressed on looks when we first walked in, but was quickly won over by our wonderful waitress. We decided to go with the firehouse burger and the voodoo burger for our entrees and had the voodoo shrimp (sweet Thai chili sauce coated on fresh fried shrimp) (delicious ?) and clam chowda for our appetizers. The clam chowder was good but seemed like it was missing something (maybe cream?) but the clams were cleaned and prepared perfectly! The chips with with chowda were seasoned and crispy. The burgers were juicy and the toppings were fresh. The fries were absolutely done right. Crispy on the outside and mashed potato-y on the inside. I got the Boo-co style fries; with cheese, bacon, and gravy (kinda like a poutine). All around, an absolutely perfect meal. We will definitely be back again!“
