Came for restaurant week and for $60 you choose from a prefix menu of an appetizer, entree, and dessert which is a great deal. We got to try a bunch of stuff on their menu (soba noodles, eggplant, sukiyaki, sushi, ice cream, and jello), all of which were amazing. We added the miso cod and it was so perfect and buttery. The staff was very attentive and nice. They made sure our tea and water glasses were filled at all times. It wasn't super crowded when we got in at 6:30pm...
Restaurant Nippon, perhaps the oldest Japanese restaurant in NYC. Very consistent and high quality Japanese fare. Like everything else in NYC, prices have gone up past 2-3 years. I think they have the best tempura in NYC. Sushi is also very good especially for a non sushi specialty restaurant. Take advantage of restaurant week menu and the new Dassai sake brewed in NY state.
Nippon keeps delivering great authentic, extremely fresh food. From the house-sourced soba to perfect miso cod, exquisitely fresh sushi to a wide variety of dashi-based soups, it's all beautifully prepared, with the modern touches in the character of the true tradition. Very rare to find anything like this in the US - usually one must choose between extremely high-end sushi and inauthentic fake Japanese places whose quality does not stand a chance against the original.
