“First time I’d visited Wheatley, Ontario, I came to pick up a scarce inventory item from the local Home Hardware. My wife and I wanted to get some breakfast, but judging by the name and the exterior of Lil Hil’s Coffee Shop, we thought it was a very small specialty coffee house serving pastries.
Instead, we’d mistakenly drove to Leamington to get a meal, which was less than satisfactory. As we drove back home to Chatham, I reflected on a statement made earlier by the female manager at Home Hardware, who said she’d just had a great breakfast a Lil Hil’s Coffee Shop.
Having heard so much about the Sunday Evening musical venues hosted at the nearby Two Creeks Conservation Area this past Summer, my wife and I decided to take a second look at Lil Hil’s Coffee Shop after hiking around the trails in the conservation area. It was Sunday October 06, 2024, the day Tilbury became a Ghost Town without power, quiet abandoned streets with nary a single sole to be seen or heard.
We were blown away when we got inside Lil Hil’s Coffee Shop. The place was a beehive of activity with their entire staff taking full advantage of the large number of people coming in for a meal. We were gobsmacked by the servers, who were young enough to be our grandchildren, tag-teaming together like a well-oiled machine. I’ve attached a couple of photos of the interior taken near closing time for those people like ourselves who might have thought the place would be too small.
We were fortunate to have a very satisfying meal, as the kitchen had nearly run out of food due to the sudden rush of customers from Ghost Town Tilbury, which would later become re-inhabited by the end of the day. My wife had a delicious meal of Pancakes & Mennonite Sausage, while I had a unique satisfying Southwest Breakfast Burrito.
{Gave Four Stars for Atmosphere due to music being louder than desired.}“
