About Rice & Sambal

Rice & Sambal is a small, intimate restaurant known for its authentic and traditional Indonesian dishes. The atmosphere is cozy with a nice vibe, making it a perfect spot for special occasions and memorable meals. The menu is very shrimp and shellfish-forward, but also offers a variety of vegetarian and vegan options that are well-made and flavorful. Dishes like the eggplant balado, tempe bacem, jackfruit stew, and vegetable fritters showcase the deep flavors achieved through slow cooking and proper preparation. The sambals, including a bright green sambal with lemongrass, add vibrant flavors and serve as perfect dipping sauces. The restaurant also features charcoal-grilled items, such as grilled maitake and Indonesian street corn, highlighting traditional cooking methods. The food consistently impresses with its balance and taste, with many reviewers describing it as some of the best Indonesian food they’ve had outside of Indonesia, tasting “correct” and authentic. The owners are kind and thoughtful, attentive to allergies, and provide detailed information about each course. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality and authenticity justify the cost. Overall, Rice & Sambal is highly recommended for those looking for a genuine Indonesian culinary experience, supporting small businesses and diverse communities. It’s a place that leaves guests full, satisfied, and eager to return.

Amazing food and atmosphere, one of the best new restaurants in Philly!

When we spend $200 on a meal, we sometimes still leave hungry but we left rice n Sambal full and satisfied. I’d love...read full review

Food was absolutely phenomenal, one of the best meals I can remember. We did the a Vegan Liwetan and it blew my mind. The owners were extremely kind as well and this is definetly a must visit. Can’t wait to go back!
