Fresh Garden Kitchen-鑫福源 is an excellent, reasonably priced Chinese restaurant in Squirrel Hill, considered one of the best in Pittsburgh. It offers a wide variety of authentic Chinese dishes with a specialty in food from the northeast (东北) region, providing real Chinese flavor. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh, and tasty, with the cook being a master of ingredients and technique.
Recommended dishes include the excellent eggplant dish and cabbage dish, General Tso, dumplings, and tasty soup. For authentic tastes, try the squirrel fish with shrimp, mapo tofu, soybean paste noodle, crispy cabbage for dessert, 溜肉段, and the spicy shredded potato salad. The roasted lamb skewers are perfect, delicious, and authentic Chinese night-market style. Other standout items are the deep fried spicy intestines, the 凉皮 mung bean noodle salad, authentic pork dish with Chinese peppers and wood ear mushrooms, fried rice, and Orange Chicken.
The restaurant is BYOB, perfect for drinks with friends. The staff is friendly, helpful, and accommodating, and the restaurant seems clean. A minor downside is that the wait can be a bit long during busy hours because every dish is freshly made to order. The overall experience is highly recommended for anyone wanting to experience real northeastern Chinese flavor.
