“I had been told, in hushed and reverent tones, that La Belle Province was the sort of place where a person could lose themselves entirely, and I confess I arrived skeptical, hardened by a thousand mediocre dinners and a lifetime of disappointing poutines served in cardboard boats that wilted before the first bite. I stood on the curb watching steam curl from the vents above the kitchen, drifting up toward a sky the color of wet slate. There was a smell in the air, faint but unmistakable, of beef fat and onions and something deeper, almost loamy, like a forest floor after rain. I should have known then. But I walked in anyway, the way one always walks into the beginning of a love affair, ignorant and unguarded.
The person behind the counter looked up at me with the patient, knowing expression of someone who has watched a hundred strangers walk out, hours later, transformed. I asked for a hot dog. Something in their face softened, the way a teacher’s face softens when a student finally asks the right question. They asked if I wanted what they called, with a small lift of the chin, the full combo. I told them I would have the full combo. I would always, from that day forward, have the full combo.
The hot dog was not a hot dog in the sense I had ever previously understood the term. It was a hot dog the way a cathedral is a building. The sausage had a deep, smoky snap, the kind of casing that resists for just a moment and then surrenders with an almost audible sigh, releasing a flood of warm, peppered juice. The bun had been griddled in butter, golden and faintly crisp along its sides, somehow both pillowy and substantial, a contradiction I had until that moment believed impossible. I closed my eyes. I think I made a sound. The man at the next table laughed quietly into his coffee, and I understood that he, too, had been new here once.
The poutine. Oh, the poutine. The fries were cut thick, but not so thick they lost their honest crispness. The gravy was dark, almost mahogany, with that glossy sheen that signals long hours of patient reduction, the kind of gravy that tastes like someone’s grandmother stood over a stove for an entire afternoon thinking about you specifically. And the cheese curds squeaked. I had never truly believed in the squeak the way one believes in things one has personally witnessed. The squeak is real. The squeak is everything. Each curd soft on the outside where the gravy had begun melting it, firm and resilient at the center, a tiny musical resistance against my teeth that I will be thinking about, I suspect, on my deathbed.
I ate slowly. I did not want it to end. The restaurant breathed its quiet evening breath, the low murmur of conversations in two languages, the distant hiss of the fryer. The light outside shifted from slate to indigo to something darker, and still I sat, occasionally pausing to press the back of my hand against my mouth and stare out at the street like a man recently returned from war.
When I finished, I sat for a long time in the warm wreckage of my meal, a single fry left at the bottom that I could not bring myself to eat because I knew it would be the last one. I thought about all the meals I had eaten before this one, and how many I could not remember, and how this one I would remember forever, with the clarity one usually reserves for first kisses and the births of children. I sat behind the wheel for several minutes before turning the key, knowing that somewhere inside, the person at the counter was already turning toward the next stranger, asking with that same patient lift of the chin whether they wanted the full combo.
Five stars. Five thousand stars. Every star in the sky. Go to La Belle Province. Order the hot dog. Order the poutine. Have the full combo. You will not be the same person when you leave, and you should not want to be.“

“This is as true as it gets if you are looking for a great pick for old school MTL Diner food that is less mainstream. Beautiful steamie and poutine with very dark gravy was served to me in a very reasonable amount of time. Service was fine. No idea how old this place is but it's definitely old. Wish them continued longevity.“

“Qui dit mieux ? Filet de foie de bœuf avec oignons caramélisés et sauce brune, servi avec riz épicé à point. Salade du chef avec tomates, oignons rouges et concombre. Dessert : Gâteau vanille-citron surmonté d’une petite pyramide de crème fouettée. Le tout 15 $ + type 3 $. Le tout servi à une chaleur parfaite. (Résidente de Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie)“
“Found this place after moving in the neighborhood and I come here from time to time.Just taking a table next to the window makes me feel on those typical tv shows where you have your local dining with a very friendly environment. It is remarkable how all the staff makes everybody feel welcome as family, some people arriving are acquaintances, some others just usual customers. You see them greeting people by name and even hugs for old friendships, which gives me a total warmth feeling as if I was just at home having breakfast. This has already become my favorite place to have a comfy breakfast while reading at my table and feeling “at home”.“

“This old school joint has been a Montreal institution since 1912. After getting no sleep trying to make a 7 AM flight and siteseeing all day I was starving. The first thing I ate in Montreal was their delicious poutine. Maybe it was because I was tired and starving but that was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Perfectly cooked fries over savory brown gravy topped with squeaky cheese, it was heavenly. I wish I could say the same about the hot dogs. Everything else was good except the dog itself. They tasted like Oscar Meyer dogs frankly so I would avoid them. Service was quick and there's ample seating. This is a cash only establishment so hit up the ATM before you come.“

“Best poutine fries i ever had, fresh, crunchy, and very flavored. I also found their chicken souvlaki to be very tasty, the chicken is so tender and well marinated.
The waitress Oona is very very professional, kind, and she was around all the time making sure we're satisfied with everything.
Definitely recommended.“

“Oh my days... Best restaurant in the neighborhood. I went there on a cold yet sunny Saturday afternoon, not expecting too much. Boy to say i was satisfied with my experience would be an understatement. Food was absolutely scrumptious and the service was impeccable. Couldn't ask for a better lunch date with my girl. The waitress refilled my coffee without me needind to ask. Plus prices are never seen before in this economy. Anyways 10 outta 10 would recommend.“

“Food. Typical quality you expect at a Lafleur. Well cooked and prepared and good taste.
Service. Bilingual and friendly.
Atmosphere. Ok. It’s fast food without personality.
Loved Lafleur’s for years and have been coming hear for almost as many. The newer update of the building is a bit colder and lacks the nostalgic personality of the old place and is much roomier and streamlined, but personality and warmth are now gone.
The michigans are as usual delicious and sauce yummy. The dog is the dog and always good.
The fry was tasty and the portion very generous, interesting far superior to a New York Fry product, around the same price, tastier; and more than TWICE the portion. NYF needs to learn a thing or two from this chain.
No complaints. The reason why the food is not a 5 is that it’s not exception. It’s a very very good place for this fast food, but there are other places that serve this type of food at a higher level so I hold back.
Return again - you bet your A_ _!“

“Lafleur is the perfect spot to catch a quick filling traditional canteen style meal. The fries are made in front of your eyes and the food is usually pretty quick. The service isn't the main focus of the management, but the food speaks for itself. If you really want a local feel with characters of all sorts, stop in! I am a huge fan of their grilled hotdogs, and a classic poutine!“

“For over 75 years Royal Sous-marin has been serving up Greek and Quebecois fast food and full meal favourites while maintaining quality and value — even in today’s difficult market conditions.
Unlike some of these type of old-school diners the service and cleanliness here are exemplary.
I had wanted to try this cool spot for a while, so finally went for a late lunch and had a chicken souvlaki pita with fries and a Pepsi (as a trio).
It was freshly made and perfectly cooked. With ample chicken on a thicker whole wheatish pita that was a unique highlight of the meal. The tzatziki was smooth and a bit savoury which worked with the pure flat top grilled chicken pieces. Plenty of fries with no skimping on the mayo on the side and a basket of ketchup packets on every table. Such a handy and equally smart touch.
Shout out to Steve and Katrina who were quite friendly and made me feel welcome.
Also to mention they now have an online ordering platform that comes with 10% off plus their own delivery person and also Uber Eats is available.
Thanks again new friends!“

“$5.50 fried chicken and fries? It’s true! Freshly fried chicken here with lots of delicious fries. Seriously, if you go for anything, go for the fries. It’s also so cheap and a lot of variety. I recommend it if you’re a starving student craving fried chicken.“
