The Island Shack Cafe, now known as Driftwood Diner, is a popular spot for locals, offering dishes like the pulled pork sandwich and Carolina pork BBQ sandwich. The new chef Angela is highly praised for her splendid food, especially the fried chicken, which many find comforting and reminiscent of home-cooked meals. Customers enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, often listening to music from The Eagles and late 70s hits, especially when sitting under the big oak tree. The cafe serves food in baskets, and portions are generally good. The grouper sandwich is delicious, and onion rings are a favorite. The biscuits and gravy are tasty, and some customers say the biscuits are excellent—so much so that not eating them might be considered doing it wrong. The breakfast offerings include eggs cooked just as requested, super fun hash browns that look like they use a waffle iron, and cheese grits that are considered some of the best around. Many appreciate the clean bathroom and the shaded picnic tables where strangers often become friends. However, during busy times such as fundraisers, the cafe can be very crowded, with some waiting over an hour for their orders. Despite occasional closures, many find it a great place to relax, enjoy good food and music, and soak in the laid-back vibe.
