OKO Austin is an exciting new restaurant that has opened in the lively East Austin area. The restaurant offers an elevated dining experience with Filipino cuisine, featuring a spacious interior that is often quite busy, so it's recommended to make a reservation in advance. The atmosphere hints at the culinary adventure that awaits, with friendly and attentive staff providing great hospitality.
The menu at OKO features a variety of Filipino-inspired dishes, including the crispy and salty chicken skin chicharon, the chargrilled Manok (chicken skewers) served with a sweet and tangy sauce, and the decadent ox tail Kare-kare, which includes braised bone marrow and a savory bagoong sauce. The Lechon, or crispy skin pork belly, is another highlight, served with a spicy vinegar sauce and a sweet chili sauce. The pork skewers, not shown in the pictures, are delicious with the two sauces provided, though two skewers may feel a little disappointing for the price.
The beverage menu is noteworthy, with cocktails like the Rock Lee, featuring pandan flavor and a plum garnish, and the 1000 Miles North, a smoky mezcal-based old fashioned with a smoked banana garnish. For dessert, the calamansi cream pie, which resembles a key lime pie or lemon bar but with a more mellow citrus flavor, is a must-try. The flan stands out as the star of the desserts, being extremely rich, silky, with a delicate caramel topping, and the Halo-Halo is very refreshing.
Overall, this restaurant creates a memorable experience with good service and flavorful dishes. It is a great spot for special occasions or date nights, especially if you enjoy Filipino food with a nice atmosphere. There is also a vegetarian dish on the menu that looked great, though vegetarians and vegans might find fewer options. While the restaurant is cashless, which can be inconvenient for some, the care and attention to detail in every aspect make OKO Austin a highly recommended place for those seeking bold flavors and a welcoming environment.
