Extremely disappointed. We ordered kare kare, dinuguan, and 2 bbq skweres. The kare kare was BURRRRNNNTTT. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THEY WOULD SERVE US BURNT FOOD LITERALLY TASTES ASH IN THE SOUP. I PAID $51 WHICH IS ON THE HIGH END AND IT DONT EVEN COME WITH RICE YOU GOTTA PAY FOR IT. I do not recommend coming here. Go to the jollibee that is a 1 minute walk by there if you craving filipino food.

Located in Downtown Houston's Medical Center we decided to give this place a try since we were in the area. My parents ordered the Lechon while I ordered the Diniguan. These dishes did not come with rice or any other sides and are priced individually so we had to order the steamed rice. Authentic tasting Diniguan was flavorful while the Lechon was alittle on the burnt side. It was a good thing portion size was enough to feed the 3 of us. Service was fast and friendly and the restaurant was clean. We may come back whenever we're in the area to try other menu items. Not to mention there was a Filipino Market a couple stores down and a delicious Filipino bakery across the street!

As Estonians, we go through this area frequently mostly to get to the Medical Center sometimes go watch a Texans game. Today we decided to hit MAX‘s. This restaurant looked pretty empty at the beginning, but as I looked at the clock, it was about 5 PM and around six. It started getting busy. Our server was very courteous and kind. He took our orders and read them back to us. We had the staple chicken, which is very juicy and crispy. I would recommend getting a whole chicken taking the rest home. This is Family style so be ready for that. The garlic rice is very garlicky in the Lumpia was great. We will definitely come back. I was hoping that they would have karaoke they should have it every day.

05/25 My online order was scheduled for pickup at 5:15 PM based on the SMS confirmation I received. However, I ended up waiting an additional 35 minutes before finally receiving my order. What made this even more disappointing was that there were only 2 occupied tables in the entire dining area at the time.

Food feedback:
• Sinigang na Baboy – The meat was extremely hard and chewy, and the soup did not have the authentic sinigang taste we expected. We ended up not eating it.

• Kare-Kare – The meat was so tough it was almost impossible to eat. Unfortunately, we also ended up not eating this dish. (Also the crispy pata)

• Pancit – The flavor was acceptable, but the vegetables did not taste fresh.

• Max’s Chicken – The chicken still tasted good as expected. However, I requested for it to be cut, and the crew informed me they could no longer do it because it had already been packed. Considering the 35-minute delay, there should have been enough time to accommodate such a simple request.

• Rice – The quality was disappointing and not what I would expect from Max’s.

I hope management takes this feedback seriously. Both the service and food quality need significant improvement. Otherwise, you risk losing customers, just like many other Filipino restaurants here in Houston that eventually closed due to declining standards.

If you’re craving authentic Filipino comfort food, Max's Restaurant is a reliable go-to that brings a taste of home right to the city.

Located among other Filipino stores, the restaurant sits in a little hub that instantly feels familiar to anyone missing Pinoy culture. From the moment you walk in, the warmth of Filipino hospitality is evident—the staff are friendly, welcoming, and very attentive throughout the meal.

They offer value deals like Easter combo meals at a good price, though we skipped it caure I was craving specific favorites. The menu delivers all the classics, and the spread doesn’t disappoint.

Dishes like lumpiang shanghai are crispy and savory, sinigang na baboy has that perfect tangy, comforting broth, and pancit canton is flavorful and well-balanced. The lechon kawali stands out with its crunchy skin and tender meat, while staples like adobo and binagoongan bring rich, bold flavors that hit the spot. Even the adobo rice ties everything together, making the meal deeply satisfying—exactly what you’d want when you’re missing home-cooked Filipino food. Ablnd of course, MAX's Chicken.

Portions are very “Pinoy style”—just right for one to two people per dish, making it ideal for sharing and trying a variety. The food overall feels authentic, hearty, and worth it.

The interior leans a bit dated, reminiscent of Max’s branches from the late 2000s, but it’s clean and comfortable enough. The restroom is also well-maintained, which is always a plus.

One downside is the wait time—it can take close to an hour, especially during busy periods. Patience is definitely required, but once the food arrives, it makes up for it.

Overall, it’s a solid spot for Filipino cuisine in Houston. Between the authentic flavors, attentive service, and comforting atmosphere, it’s a place that satisfies both your appetite and your nostalgia.

I have never given a bad review before, it’s unkind but it’s just disappointing, if they see this review pls. consider the comments.
First, i actually relayed that its Lenten , so i asked and i was told that there are few dishes that are vegetables, no meat snd he said the lumpiag ubod and pinakbet was among them .
The pinakbet was so undercooked, ( yes filipino cooking is not to “ limp” the vegetables , but one has to be able to chew the green beans, the talong i cannot describe as to the rest of the vegetables, very bland despite it bring cooked in shrimp paste and even added the side alamang could not save it and to top it , there was meat in the dish. As to the lumpiang ubod , the worst, its suppose to be fresh, the crepe was do over cooked , and the inside was do mushy not fresh .. it was severely disappointing.
Perhaps, only the chicken has not changed in taste. I barely ate the pinakbet ( the picture below) as to the ubod they were tiny pieces and I haven’t eaten all day, been traveling.
This is the first review I really did, it’s unfortunate .
My review my personal opinion, perhaps I just had higher expectations especially from the last time I ate here years ago.
