“Conveniently located in Gastown, this tight space restaurant just wins my heart. Upon seating we were notified about the two-hour dining time. Since it’s our first time, the server briefly went over the menu in quite a fast pace - we definitely feel the pressure to speed up the order and dinning experience. This is the least favourite part of the entire evening. Exceptional food - the beef tongue cold appetizer is delightfully pleasant and tasty. The premium sashimi platter is plentiful with various types of sashimi with decent thickness. Totally love it. The bluefin tuna hand roll is good. The beef tongue steak with teriyaki sauce is very juicy, soft, tender and melt in the mouth. We genuinely enjoy the food. Wish the service can be less rushed and it would be the perfect dining experience. Overall, highly recommend.“

“My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our new life together and we chose this place based on the reviews, as well as for the fact that he had fond memories of Kingyo when he visited 4 years ago. Every single dish we ordered this time (miso soup, sashimi salad, chicken karrage, uni miso udon, seafood bibimap, black sesame panna cotta, silken tofu dessert, and hojicha azuki roll) were all perfectly seasoned and made with incredibly fresh ingredients. Standouts were the miso soup (this was the first time I’ve ever come across a miso soup that was not overly salty, I could drink an entire vat of this lol), chicken karrage (impossibly juicy and had the natural sweetness mastered from meat being perfectly cooked), uni miso udon (not a fan of udon noodles or ikura usually but these noodles were fantastically chewy and soft at the same time, the salty fishiness from the burst roe eggs complemented the richness of the uni and the uni flavour was creamy, decadent and a complete umami bomb), and the panna cotta (delicious pure flavour of black sesame that’s incredibly velvety and nutty, and took me back to my childhood days of enjoying black sesame soup with my family). Decor and interior aesthetics were very warm and entertaining to look at , especially all of the dark wood accents and the bamboo on the communal table. The one dish we ordered that we enjoyed but found to be slightly too salty was the stone grill beef tongue - the meat itself was crisp (almost equivalent texture to pork cheek, which I am a huge fan of) and had great natural flavour, but the tongue came with a salty miso sauce on the side that paired with the tongue was overly salty as we found out that the tongue itself without any sauce had already been pre-salted. Portion sizes were also very good between 2 adults - we were definitely full at the end but didn’t feel heavy at all
Overall, we experienced an incredible feast of flavours, service and warmth, and can’t wait to come back try more dishes !“

“The best and friendliest people. My flight home was cancelled at 10pm and my phone was dead. This was one of the only places left open and I decided it was my best shot. Instantly I had multiple workers ready to help me during my very bad night. They took the time to talk to me and understand the unfortunate situation that I was in. They charged my phone, were preparing to serve me great food and beverages on the house, and were all making sure I was okay. I felt very welcomed by their friendly service and smiles. When I had to leave, every worker was saying goodbye to me like we had known each other for a long time. Incredibly grateful for everything this restaurant offered me. I went from worrying about how I was getting home to making friends with a smile on my face. People and an experience that I will never forget.“

“First time for us, attended a private function. Food was delicious and filling. The service was outstanding and extremely attentive. They had a vast array of sake and after ordering the sake flight (sampler tray), we found a few options that we really liked and ordered a couple of bottles. The sashimi was very fresh and delicious. There was an assortment of dishes that we tried that were on par with many of the high end restaurants, such as the egg omelet with crab ankake and the BBQ eel Unagi rice bowl. Street parking was easy to find. We’d definitely come back to Hashigo Sake Bar.“

“One of the most fun izakaya experiences I’ve had in Vancouver 🇯🇵✨
Guu with Garlic really feels like stepping into a lively late-night spot in Japan. The energy inside is amazing — staff greet everyone loudly when you walk in, and the whole restaurant has a warm, bustling atmosphere.
The menu is full of flavorful Japanese tapas and garlic-inspired dishes 🤤 From grilled skewers and fried dishes to noodles and small plates, everything is perfect for sharing with friends over drinks.
It’s not just about the food here — it’s the kind of place that becomes part of your travel memories.
Definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for a fun and authentic izakaya experience in Vancouver 🍺“

“Their lunch specials are affordable and tasty. The service for lunch time on the weekday wasn’t like dinner. There’s only one staff on the dining area and she always disappears. No water refills at all until we asked for it at the very end. No big deal since the lunch was so cheap and we didn’t expect any service. Still going back for food. Recommend.“
