Guu with Otokomae Reviews
Wow, The grill mackerel lunch set is delicious and very reasonably priced.
Not oooh but guuuu! Gotta level up that lingo nahhmean? My server gave me a secret off the menu beef and udon dish which literally sizzled to the point of creating dancing bonito flakes as I tried to document in the video below. The classic tofu salad with a romesco sweet pepper twist was also sublime but honestly the best part was the second floor people judging ..I mean watching.. of notoriously colourful/sketchy/surreal Gastown.
I was revisiting here having not been for 10+ years and it's still as brilliant as I remember. We came along at lunchtime where there was a scaled back menu, but everything we had was so vibrant and delicious. I remember the chicken karaage being good, but this absolutely exceeded my expectations - crispy, juicy and light at the same time, I don't think I've had better anywhere else. Guu with Otokomae offers a delightful dining experience with a variety of delicious dishes. The salmon and friends dish comes highly recommended, along with the Karaage, which has tender chicken inside and a crisp outside. For those interested in oysters, the Guu on Davie location is suggested. The sashimi salad is a generous portion with diced tuna, grilled salmon, and scallops, topped with excellent dressing. The grilled salmon bento box and grilled mackerel bento box are both large and reasonably priced at $15.80 each. The miso soup, while a bit salty, is still enjoyable. The Beef Udon (Guuu'd Yaki Udon) is good, with bonito flakes adding great flavor, though the sauce could be stronger. The octopus Takoyaki comes with a delicious dipping sauce. The service is prompt and attentive, and the atmosphere is lively and friendly, with great energy. Access to the seating area requires navigating two flights of stairs. Overall, Guu with Otokomae is a great choice for a cozy meal, especially on a cold rainy day.
