Since hubby misses Japan (the food especially) immensely, I decided to bring Japan to him for his birthday! It was more than we could've hoped for from the gracious hosts, Chef Ray and wife Christine, to the gorgeous presentation of each course, the preparations of each item, the texture, the taste and the cosy atmosphere. We savoured each bite, while enjoying the friendly banter between the hosts and a couple of their regulars at the bar seating.
Highly recommend!

Kuroki Kaiseki Omakase Kitchen (黑木関西会席料理) offers a truly authentic and memorable Japanese dining experience. The restaurant is a small, intimate space run by passionate chefs and friendly staff, including Ray and Christine, who provide excellent service and warm hospitality. The chef brings a deep knowledge of Japanese culinary culture and philosophy, ensuring each dish reflects care and technical skill. The menu features seasonal dishes that change regularly, showcasing traditional techniques and high-quality ingredients imported directly from Japan.
Highlights include beautifully plated courses that are as much art as food. Guests enjoy dishes like sashimi, with a focus on fresh, expertly prepared fish such as hotate, take no ko mebaru, hou bou, matou dai, and bluefin, including lightly seared akami and chu-toro. The sashimi often comes in generous portions, with favorites like the bluefin tuna cheek sashimi standing out as some of the best ever tasted. The wan-mono, a velvety bonito and kunbu broth with Japanese root vegetables and seaweed, offers a full-bodied flavor experience. Another special dish is the yakimono, a stuffed baked crab shell with creamy mashed potato, sweet scallops, kani, and kani miso, topped with crunchy panko, providing a luxurious mouthfeel.
Overall, Kuroki offers a rare chance to enjoy Japanese cuisine that emphasizes technique, seasonality, and philosophy. The attentive service, heartfelt preparation, and beautiful presentation make it a highly recommended destination for anyone seeking a genuine and enriching Japanese dining experience in Vancouver. Reservations are advised due to the intimate setting, and parking is plentiful outside of peak seasons.
