“Did not have a reso because I wanted sushi spontaneously, arrived alone right at 5pm when they opened and didn’t have to wait. For any later I would definitely recommend reserving cause the place got full immediately. The fish was incredibly fresh and literally melted in my mouth, I was wowed! Comparable to my dining experiences in Japan. I think a small bowl of miso soup for $3.5 is not the most economic, but at least it’s high quality and WAY better than miso soup at chain restaurants. Overall for the portion of the food it was definitely not cheap, but that’s just inflation for ya… I’d still return in the future because it’s delicious.“

“The food was absolutely incredible. Every dish came out beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The sushi tasted extremely fresh, and the grilled skewers were perfectly cooked with great seasoning. You can really tell the kitchen puts care into every item on the menu. The portions were also generous for the quality and price.“

“I went to this (kind of) hidden gem in Richmond for some quality Japanese food and it DID NOT disappoint. I got the Unagi Set, the Sashimi Set, and the Sushi Set, and the Matcha Gelato.

The place is so well designed with a Japanese style interior!! It was nice and mostly quiet. Service is a bit slow - We tried calling our server over but it took quite a while for them to take our order…

Food was amazing. The tempura which came with the set had a crispy batter and crunch, the udon was perfectly chewy, and they had very nice tea (which is quite surprising.) Fish tasted fresh, unagi sauce was amazing. We ended off with the matcha ice cream, and there was a very strong earthy flavour to it. Only thing I would nitpick on for perfection is their wasabi and their ice cream could be creamier, hence being a gelato.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience here. Reasonable prices, good food, and great staff. Definitely coming again!“

“Tokyo Joe is one of my go-to sushi spots, and it never disappoints. I keep coming back because their sushi tastes truly authentic and reflects real Japanese quality. The ingredients are fresh, the rolls are well-balanced, and the flavors are consistently excellent.
On my most recent visit, I ordered one salmon avocado roll, two house rolls, two spicy salmon rolls, a dynamite roll, and an Alaska roll—all for just $65. That’s an amazing deal considering the quality and portion sizes.
The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and attentive, which makes the dining experience even better. While the seating and service area is a bit tight, it doesn’t take away from the overall experience.
If you’re looking for authentic Japanese sushi at reasonable prices with great service, Tokyo Joe is definitely worth visiting.“

“Really good aburi and special rolls!! Highly recommend the aburi tuna nigiri and try the other aburi nigiri to see which one you like the best. They have an awesome aburi platter as well. Special rolls are also really delicious, we've tried at least 6 of them and they never miss. Service was quick and attentive. The place feels like a premium hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant. Will be back for sure.“

“Every day, an unexpected variety of fresh ingredients arrives at the restaurant, all displayed on this colorful small blackboard. The ingredients are of excellent freshness and quality.

The portion of the unagi donburi is well worth the price, and its taste and standards come very close to authentic unadon in Japan. The assorted sashimi is incredibly fresh and delicious. The soup made from fish bones, simmered with tofu, napa cabbage, and shimeji mushrooms, is also wonderfully sweet and savory.

All in all, this is a place worth revisiting to try more of their dishes.“

“Exceptional sushi! Beware of limited seating so make reservations or be prepared to wait on weekends! Quality is top notch and portions however are questionable for some dishes. For example Sunomono is high but the portion is ridiculously small. I understand prices are up for everything post covid but rice and noodles are still quite reasonable. Parking can be tough at times so be prepared to walk a bit down the street“

“Largest portion I have ever seen in my life. Can’t even fit a piece of avocado roll in one bite. The nitpicks I have is, the imitation crab is too salty and I don’t understand why they only accept cash in the restaurant but is also on Uber Eats, where you pay ANYTHING except cash.“

“Ordered seafood salad and my gf loved it. Ordered a chicken teriyaki box for myself and the chicken came as fried. Weird. Never had teriyaki chicken this style before but I guess this might be a fusion attempt or something g. Just not used to it.“

“Love Gami sushi! Great sushi, good prices and they can easily accommodate gluten free sushi. Even the rice vinegar is gluten free here which it's often not other places. We go here a lot and highly recommend! Favorite sushi place in Richmond 🙂“
