It was more than we could've hoped for from the gracious hosts, Chef Ray and wife Christine, to the gorgeous presentation of each course, the preparations of each item, the texture, the taste and the cosy atmosphere. We savoured each bite, while enjoying the friendly banter between the hosts and a couple of their regulars at the bar seating. Highly recommend! side note: I was impressed by just how meticulous and thoughtful they are when I saw they even put a little decor under the washroom sink.“

“The best place in town for a high quality all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant! Always a great dining experience dining here. Took my family here for a birthday celebration over the long weekend, and it was the busiest we've seen. The food was a bit delayed, but the staff were working hard and very attentive to more than make up for it. We had a great time and will definitely come back again!!“

“Second time here and wanted to see how their Bento boxes were.

Food was quite nice and Bento generously proportional to its price. The sushi and sashimi were fresh. A high 4 for food.

Service was acceptable considering only one person was running the whole place. Hot tea actively refilled. A solid 4.

Atmosphere was acceptable with this time the windows were boarded up. Washroom were decent. Other than that it is a high 3.

Would consider again if in the vicinity.“

“Been there 5 times and never disappointed! Their lunch menu was impressed - combos come with a drink, side and rice - the meat patties were juicy and solid. I also enjoyed their dinner sets - the two people combo is sure to have you 12/10 full with a smile! I love their Japanese style hamburger steaks - plump and juicy. The unlimited miso soup is another added highlight. Tiramisu, Penna cotta were lovely finish to a delicious dinner. Highly recommended and I’m sure to visit again soon!“

“We originally planned to have lunch at a nearby pub while watching the Team Canada soccer match, but when we arrived, the pub was already packed nearly an hour before kickoff. Looking for an alternative, we stumbled upon this Japanese restaurant specializing in ramen and yakitori —and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Although the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, it had a large television broadcasting the match live, allowing us to enjoy the game in a much more comfortable and relaxed setting without the crowds and noise of a sports bar.

We ordered the tonkotsu ramen set, which came with a side of assorted sashimi and yakitori. The food was freshly prepared and served hot. The tonkotsu broth was rich and comforting, the sashimi was fresh, and the yakitori was nicely grilled. While the food quality was good and perfectly reasonable, it wasn't particularly memorable or something that stood out from other Japanese restaurants.

What really made this visit enjoyable was the overall experience. Being able to watch Team Canada's match on a big screen while having a relaxed lunch made for an unexpectedly pleasant afternoon. Sometimes the atmosphere and timing make as much of a difference as the food itself.

Overall, this restaurant offers solid Japanese comfort food in a comfortable setting. It may not be a destination for exceptional ramen or yakitori, but it's certainly a great place to enjoy a casual meal—especially if there's a live sporting event on the big screen.“

“A good find. Small cute japanese restaurant serving japanese curry. I ordered pork cutlets and side of 2 prawns. Really good! Only thing i can say is the shereded cabbage is in small portion. All in all its a good food. pork is tender and juicy and yet crispy on the outside. Restaurant is clean with a nice simple decor!

“I used to go to the Vancouver location, but parking there has become pretty difficult, and it doesn’t seem to be as busy as it used to be. If you don’t want to wait too long, I’d definitely consider this location instead.
This was my first time here, and I was a little worried about the smell because every time I ate at the Vancouver location, I would leave smelling strongly of cooking oil from head to toe. The smell would stick to my clothes and hair so badly that I felt like I had to change and wash everything afterward.
Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. The restaurant is more spacious, and there was much less of that heavy greasy smell. The service was also great. The staff were friendly and the refills came out really quickly.
We ordered the Hire Katsu, Katsu Nabe Hire + Udon, and Kake Udon. The meat was tender and juicy, and the breading was nicely fried and didn’t fall apart.
By the time we started eating, there was already a line outside. Overall, we had a really good experience and would definitely come back.“

“We had been here once before, but it may have not been so popular. Small place with lots of customers coming and going. Can't say too much about flavor as I ordered a spicy roll. It was not spicy. I'd go back again to explore the menu more broadly.“

“I’ve been coming to Koto Izakaya for years, and it has consistently been one of my go-to spots. The food is always fresh and delicious, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the service has always been friendly and attentive.

What I appreciate most is the consistency. After all these years, I can still come in knowing I’m going to have a great meal and a good experience. Whether it’s a casual dinner, drinks with friends, or just satisfying a Japanese food craving, Koto never disappoints.

It’s always nice to support a restaurant that continues to take care of its customers year after year. Definitely a place I’m happy to keep coming back to.

“We made a reservation for dinner on Apr 22nd because we went the weekend before and it was 1 1/2 hour wait. The food was really good but small portions. We booked for 5:30pm and left at 8pm and not by choice. We took our 7 year old. His food came within about 20-30 minutes. While we got our miso, edamame and salad one at a time, It took over an hour to get our BBQ meat, and longer to get our bowls of rice. 2 1/2 hours to get our bill (with me stopping someone to ask for the bill). Our son was super excited to cook meat but was getting upset with all the waiting. Quite honestly, the 2 adults with him were too. But I would give it a try again because the food was good“

“Extremely delicious! This has to be the best Japanese restaurant I’ve visited in Richmond so far. Their food and drinks are both tasty and unique, unlike common dishes you’d get everywhere else. We ordered 8 dishes but I only got to take photos of two of them because the rest were gone before I could get my phone ready. They also offer free parking in the underground parking lot beside the restaurant.“

“We had a wonderful dinner at Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant in Richmond. The food was fresh, flavourful, and generously portioned, and the service during the meal was friendly and attentive. It really felt like the perfect dinner experience.

When it came time to pay, their card terminal unfortunately failed and didn’t record our first payment — even though our online banking showed the transaction as successful. We ended up paying a second time, which was stressful in the moment.

In fairness to Matsuyama, they handled everything professionally and honestly. They quickly looked into the issue, refunded the second payment without any hassle, and even called us afterward to apologize for the inconvenience. Their follow‑through and customer care were genuinely appreciated.

“Tsujiri at OpenRoad Toyota Richmond is a unique and authentic Japanese café experience. The matcha, green tea, and soba were all excellent, giving a real taste of Japan. While enjoying your food, you can look around at the Toyota cars, which adds a unique touch to the setting. “Took my family to dinner here as it's close to where we are staying. Been passing this place many times just didn't think they can accommodate us. 4 out of us 5 are vegetarians and I am not. Their miso soup and Agedashi tofu are vegetarian and tasty. The vegetarians ordered the tray which came with variety of rolls. I ordered their sweet shrimp, salmon belly and scallop sashimi. All very tasty. The staff was cheerful and helpful. Gave us great suggestions. Loved the experience over all.“

“I hadn't been here in a long time because I usually go to the Main location or the Oak location. My cousin was visiting from out of town, so we went straight from the airport to the Richmond location because we were all hungry.

We ordered the salmon sashimi, and the pieces were huge and thick, just like always. We also got the ikura and ika nigiri, and everything was fresh with no fishy taste at all. We ordered the Double Dragon Roll because we were craving unagi, and it was amazing. And of course, I had to get my favorite... the aburi salmon battera. It's hands down the best thing on the menu!!!

“Used to dine at Fukuroku when it was a full-service restaurant with the rotating sushi plates. After moving away, I am so happy to discover that the Express location is just as good.

There are so many “hidden gems” promoted on social media, but this truly is one of them. I’m really glad I had the chance to stop by during a work trip, and I’ll definitely be back before heading home.

The sushi was perfect (rice-to-ingredient ratio was 👌), and the teriyaki chicken was incredibly moist and full of flavour. Salad came with a traditional Japanese dressing and tempura was delicious, crispy, and not greasy. Staff was very friendly and warm. 10/10!“

“Super happy with this little sushi place. I called ahead regarding gluten free options and I got a rundown of how they can alter rolls to be gf, and that the nigiri is gluten free. They also supply gf soya sauce. The portions are very generous. I don't think I've had salmon nigiri with such large slices of salmon.
We had no wait coming in, but if it's super busy they do have a good system with a whiteboard. No reservations are taken.
I ordered through the server as she suggested this was best to flag my gf order, but there is a tablet available at the booths as well.
