“Hey there! I just wanted to share my recent visit to Ethel's Old Corral. My husband and I went there for a late lunch/early dinner after our eye doctor appointment. We had a fantastic time at this charming, old-fashioned, western-style cafe. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted warmly by the friendly hostess/waitress who led us to our table. We chose a cozy spot by the window with a great view of the Tall Indian that marks Ethyl's on Alfred Harold Hwy. The waitress handed us the menus and took our drink order right away. Our drinks were served quickly, and we placed our food order with her. I ordered the pastrami sandwich with fries for $15.00, while my husband ordered the deep-pit dinner priced at $15.00 also. While we waited for our food, we enjoyed the pop and country music playing on the jukebox. I couldn't help but notice how the new owners had significantly improved the place, including new floors and overall cleanliness. It was my first time back at Ethel's Old Corral since Ethel herself worked and owned the place. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the fantastic work of the new owner. (Check out the pictures!) Our food was served quickly and was piping hot. I have to say - Ethel's pastrami sandwich was one of the most delicious sandwiches that I've had in a long time! The meat was piled high, and the sandwich was perfectly juicy without being too greasy. And those crinkle-cut French fries were amazing! I don't know what the chef did to them, but they stayed hot throughout our meal. As my husband put it, "These fries are addictive!" I also had a taste of my husband's Deep pit meat, and let me tell you, it was smokey and tender! His dinner came with a roll and a cup of beans with cheese. I was so engrossed in eating my sandwich that I completely forgot to take a picture until I had already eaten half of it. Oops, my bad! Don't worry, I did take some photos of the cafe's interior. It's so charming and clean, you'll love it! Overall, Ethel's Old Corral was the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat. We had a great time, and we're definitely coming back for other meals. I highly recommend it!“

“Great fun -If you want to karaoke in a country atmosphere , this is the place for you. The gal running the music can sing pretty darn good ( I made a request, and she nailed it). Even though I'm not a singer, I had fun listening to some good talent.Didn't eat there. It was fairly busy and well organized.“

“My first choice in bars is the Alley Cat in Bakersfield, CA. In fact if I go out that's the only bar I go to. The bartenders are the best! They know how to treat a lady and show you a good time! It is so special that I spent my Valentine day with Johnny and my girl friends. It's the best dive bar in town. When in Bakersfield it's a must stop place. You won't regret it!“

VIP Lounge Bar • $$

“The VIP Lounge has been in business since 1976. Just a great neighborhood bar. Dark & moody with that old school vibe. Red leather banquets, tables with red leather chairs, very comfy by the way. A fairly long bar seating 11-12 . The lounge is very well maintained. The carpet & room is clean and the upholstery is in great condition. A good selection of libations. TV's for the sports fans. A juke box for your listening pleasure. A dart board for those so inclined. Karen was my friendly mixologist today. She seems to have quite the Sunday afternoon crowd. She knows everyone, is friendly providing excellent service.“

“If you like dark divey bars this is your spot. It's been around forever. It's located on 19th Street in a rather seedy area of downtown Bakersfield. Low lighting, dark wood walls and the well worn old fashioned long old wooden bar with the mirror behind. Drink prices are very reasonable. They had a BBQ that afternoon and have parties here and there. They have a regular crowd and are a great place to people watch. They have a very diverse clientele with a lot of characters. It was a Sunday afternoon, I had lunch out with family and just wasn't ready to go home. So off I go to the Mint. I hadn't been here in years. I was hoping to run into a few old friends. I'm so glad I stopped in. Rome was behind the bar doing her thing. I was just chatting and catching up with her when a couple of old friends came over to say hey as well. I spent a leisurely afternoon catching up with old aquatints and soaking up the ambience.“
