Really great food. They have many vegan and gluten free options. Even if it isn’t marked vegan on the menu, they can often make substitutions to make it vegan for you. The staff is friendly and helpful. We’ve eaten here 3-4 times, as take out and dining in. I recommend this as your go-to Indian restaurant in Oakland.
The four of us ordered three appetizers and three main dishes and they were all very delicious. They brought the appetizers first and that was good because we were getting pretty hungry. They also gave us a crispy bread with some green and red sauce on the house. We sat in a cozy booth in the corner. We will definitely check out this place again!
Five of us dined here last night and all very pleased. Ordered the Kale Chat, the Fish Pakoda, Tandoori Shrimp, Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, Butter Naan and Garlic Naan. Would happily re-order any except the Pakoda (not crispy enough). Everything else the best I’ve had at any Indian restaurant in a long while. Deserves to be a go-to place.

Bay Leaf Indian and Himalayan Cuisine offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere with a great selection of flavorful dishes. The restaurant is known for its delicious curries, naan, and appetizers, including the unique Kabuli naan that is hard to find elsewhere in Oakland. The menu features a variety of well-seasoned options, such as butter chicken, salmon coconut curry, and chicken tikka masala, all praised for their rich flavors and tender meats. The lamb saag is noted for its fresh taste and enjoyable texture, while the chicken biryani is large in portion and very tender. The dishes are often accompanied by freshly made naan, which balances fluffy and crispy qualities, and refreshing mango lassi and salted lassi. Customers appreciate the friendly service and the staff’s willingness to explain unfamiliar dishes and share stories. Many find the spice levels to be just right—hot but not overpowering—though some mention that the curry can be served very hot, suggesting a brief ice bath before serving. Overall, the restaurant provides a satisfying experience with plenty of food at affordable prices, making it a popular spot for those seeking flavorful Indian and Himalayan cuisine.
