Mandarin Gourmet Restaurant offers an authentic Chinese menu tailored to a good crowd of non-Asian customers, with iced water and forks on the table, and hot water or chopsticks provided only upon request. The food quality surprises many, with beef and broccoli not flavorful and not too salty, the cut of beef not tough or cheat. Fried rice is not too oily but filling. The seafood delight was implied by its menu name as having a nest of noodles or starch, but the server brought a nestless seafood dish. Other meals include Cheng Do Chicken with succulent, saucy, tender chicken ringed with perfectly cooked broccoli, and Pepper Steak with tender, velvety steak in a rich brown sauce. The Lunch Specials include fried wonton strips, yummy Chinese Chicken Salad, Hot and Sour Soup, and Fried Rice. Walnut shrimp is huge, and green beans, orange chicken, and beef are to liking. The restaurant has lots of Hong Kong style options, with fresh, hot, and tasty beef and chicken dishes and mixed vegetables. The Mandarin chow mein noodles are delicious, and the Gourmet salad is loaded with thinly sliced teriyaki beef. The interior is spacious with lots of seating, perfect for kids and large groups. Service is swift and effective, with an extremely pleasant and attentive waiter, though one server, Frank, comes across as rude and snippy with no smile. The only problem noticed is the paucity of customers.
