“delicious soft serve exactly where you're going to crave it - at the beach! spent the day on the sand and then headed for cones. we tried ordering the waffle cone sundae, but they misheard us, and we ended up with the one that comes in cup. would have preferred less plastic. ah, well. it was still good, if not a comically large amount of soft serve... that we managed to finish :)“

Pecan Pie

“This review is only for the Pecan Pie which is incredibly delicious. We bought the smaller one as we've never tried their Pecan Pie. We will definitely be buying the regular size soon. The Pecan Pie is a 2023 winner at the National Pie Championships! We've eaten several types of their pies in the past and they're all delicious. The Cherry Pie, Pumpkin Pie and The Berry Bomb were all 2023 winners in their divisions. You can order the pies online or at many Farmers Markets or some grocery stores. I would highly recommend giving them a try.“

“Twinkies stand, the funny thing is we didn't order Twinkies, we went with the deep fried Oreo's and Pb&J instead. I recommend eating it right away because they will be nice and warm and it will taste just right. You can find this stand next to one of the Sky Gilder entraces. Do you ever have any Deep fried cravings? ?“

“Worth the wait! The funnel cakes are always nice and warm when served. We ordered the Strawberry and Oreo cookie funnel cake, the strawberries have a Strawberry syrup which makes the funnel cake super tasty. The oreo funnel cake has a caramel drizzle which was a nice touch. Stop by and try them out!“

Tater Twist

“The line is always long during the afternoons and now I know why. These tater twists are incredible, crunchy and savory. You can choose from multiple flavors to add and then add chili or lime toppings over on the left hand side of the building. It's fun to see them make these twists through the window. Staff was very friendly, definitely worth the wait.“

World Grill & Beer Garden Beer Gardens • $
400 Beach St, Santa Cruz

“A surprisingly good dining spot, especially for the boardwalk. My wife got the spicy chicken fajita and it was substantial. I got the Philly steak, without veggies. Good amount of meat, very thinly cut, with just a light amount of char. Could've used a tad more cheese, but nbd. My kids ate grilled cheese, and it was on really good quality bread. The total cost was $31.52, which is a little pricey for the amount of food. But given the location, you have to expect a slight premium. Overall, I'd recommend World Grill.“

613 Beach St, Santa Cruz

“Whiting's Foods this year celebrates 70 years of operating concessions at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, coinciding with the 10-year mark of a review that panned the company's revision of possibly its most innovative product ever.Jenny Whiting Gump, director of Whiting's marketing, wrote in her featured 5/24/23 SCBB "Boardwalk Archives" piece about the return of what I termed the OG Sandae in a 9/24/13 review:"In addition to creating new menu items, we have also recently brought back one of our original menu items, the Sandae (not sundae!). This cherished frozen novelty consists of chocolate malt ice cream between two graham crackers, dipped in chocolate, and the name comes from the unique topping - a dusting of crushed almonds that resembles sand."Wow, that sounds pretty darn familiar. From the aforementioned review:"In days of old, the attendant would remove from the freezer a graham-cracker ice-cream sandwich, dip it in chocolate and, before the coating could solidify, dredge it through a tray of nuts ground into a powdery texture, resembling sand, and hand it to you protected by a sheet of wax tissue."No need to further rip the successor Sandae (see first review). Neither the Whiting's website nor the 'net has any info on that product or its debut date. The firm mentions in passing the OG's revival as early as 2020, when it sought trademarks for a cellophane-packaged authentic Sandae and its name, registered in 2021.Created in 1935--arguably the equal of the storied It's-It from San Francisco's late Playland--Sandae and its Boardwalk owner-concessionaire were acquired in 1953 to found Whiting's, which decades later cast the confection to the sea gulls. What better time than now to bury that blunder, regain elderly purists, and allure all those with a sweet tooth to enjoy frozen bliss?
