“I hadn’t been to J&J Bakery since they had changed ownership from Sanitary Bakery. After figuring out Starbucks coffee across the street prompts me stomach issues, I decided to give J&J Bakery a visit. Today, I got their coffee, cream, and sugar. I was impressed by the flavor and freshness of the coffee. Additionally I got me a sugar twist, an apple turnover, and a brownie. I took a bite of each before writing this review and they all taste better than anything I’ve had at Starbucks. It’s sad that by virtue of habit we go to corporation chain stores and never give the local moms and pops store a chance.I recommend this bakery for its coffee and pastries. Give it a shot instead of Starbucks. You won’t be disappointed.“

“Great tasting ice cream and friendly staff. The line is usually always super long. My only complaint is that I wish large parties would order, receive their order, and wait outside until the rest of their party is done. Most times, you have many people who've paid but are sitting around. The place is too small, and the outside is too large to be just sitting, taking up space in an already small place.“

“I'm hesitant to tell you how good the buckwheat financiers are, because they will likely sell out even faster, but they are remarkably good.

There's a reason there is almost always a line outside the door here. Great treats and coffee, along with quick, friendly service.

My favorite in particular is Tina’s delicious red velvet cupcakes. The treats are tasty and made with love. More than that, Tina provides superior customer service. “We dropped a hot dog bun and they were very kind. Appreciate it dude. You know who you are 😅 We always get the egg and ham, chasiu bao, red bean bread and yam bread. The egg tarts are pretty good too. They use to be a bit more affordable but it’s a win if you can buy 6 items for under $20 these days.

We’ve been coming here since they opened. Really appreciate having an HK style bakery out here in San Mateo :)“

“This place is a hole in the wall. We ordered a slice of the following: matcha slice cake, tiramisu slice cake and black sesame slice cake. Omg. Their slice cake is a bit expensive but it so worth it. My favorite is the black sesame cake. My sister in law was the matcha cake. We had to order a cake for a birthday so guess what we ordered?“

“You definitely need to know what order here:
Egg tarts and BBQ pork buns are made fresh in the morning and honestly quite the hidden gem here. I'm an egg tart connoisseur, and for a hole in the wall in the Mission, it actually is one of the better egg tarts in SF, in fact, the peninsula. (Try to buy them earlier in the day though).

Many of the other items are a gamble though; many of the cakes don't seem fresh. It's probably best to ask the employees when each thing was baked.“

“This is a cute little bakery and very busy most of the time. The service was great, but it felt so rushed that I didn’t get to see all the options because there was a long line behind me. Good business, I suppose.

I ordered a few slices of their cake options: strawberry shortcake, mango tres leches (not the traditional version), tiramisu, and carrot cake. My favorite was the carrot cake—it had the perfect balance of moisture and sweetness, and you could tell they used fresh ingredients. I hope my next visit isn’t as busy so I can explore all the options and try more!“

This is the nearest branch to South City after the Junipero and San Bruno locations closed. There is ample parking available, and parking is free after 6:00 PM.
The restaurant is clean and well-maintained. Although the dining area is a bit small, it did not feel crowded when I visited shortly after noon. The facilities were clean, the serving sizes were good, and the prices were reasonable. There is also a code required to access the restroom.“
