“First time visit, great views of boats and river activity. Nice wine selections. Clam chowder was outstanding, not thick but more RI type with jalapeño slight bite, lots of clams, potato flavor. Mussels (white) with great well cooked fries great broth, would have liked more bread to dip in sauce. Quinoa salad was just ok. Fried calamari with cherry peppers was well done, firm not rubbery or too chewy. Will definitely return!“

“First meal here with my husband for his birthday. The entire evening was relaxed and very delicious! We cleaned our plates and polished off a few very creative (beet!) cocktails, but the nicest part was the card for my husband that was waiting on the table when we arrived, wishing him a hand written happy birthday singed by the staff. That extra special touch was just so thoughtful. We will for sure be back- with friends!!“

“What an amazing experience. I first want to thank the bartender Dylan for welcoming us and allowing our night to be the most special experience. We started drinks off and they were really delicious. The food came out in a timely manner and I love how the kitchen is in the same room as you. I ordered the egg toast with caviar and the short rib. My boyfriend got the waygu steak, he said it was the best steak he's ever had. I tried a piece he's not wrong! The bar seats are so comfy and I loved being able to enjoy a fancy dinner. The desserts were very rich. Thank you The Essex!“

“Overall good experience.Appetizer was crispy duck wings which were delicious and perfectly cooked. For the mains I got the poke and my girlfriend, the veggie burger w/ truffle w/ fries. The poke included fresh tuna and the rice was cooked perfectly, however in my opinion the sauce was too tomatoey flavored and overpowered the rest of the dish. The veggie burger tasted good but would benefit from the patty being a little crispier.Had the warm chocolate chip cookie w/ ice cream for desert which was lovely.Overall good experience and would go back. Means of comments above is suggestions to enhance what the restaurant has to offer.“

“Truly one of the best meals I’ve had in Connecticut! The French onion soup was AMAZING—the combo of caramelized onions + crispy onions was ? plus the gruyère!The duck was melt in your mouth tender with an incredible pepper crust, seared to perfection. The crispy polenta cake was also done really well. The swiss chard + pancetta added a nice, zingy contrast. For dessert, I had the turtle cake which was fluffy & moist with caramel + candied pecans.Big kudos to the chef & kitchen staff! My server was also very kind & knowledgeable. The manager graciously sat me at a lovely table even though I was a solo diner.I left my phone at the hotel, otherwise I’d share pics!“

“Had a wonderful birthday meal. It was the day before St. Patrick's Day so the specials were Irish oriented. My husband had the whiskey honey glazed salmon which he said was very tasty. My daughter had the traditional corned beef and cabbage and my son had Shepard's pie. Not much was left to bring home in doggie bags. Lots of nice wood paneling inside and we were seated near the fireplace. The grandkids even enjoyed it.Parking: The restaurant is right off of Route 9 in Old Saybrook. There is parking in both the front and the back of the restaurant.Wheelchair accessibility: Walk up ramp for a cess to front door and outdoor seating when the weather is nice.“

Tried their pork ribs and crawfish. Pork ribs we great, but unfortunately, crawfish was served raw. We also tried their fried chicken and poppy seed salmon. Both were delicious. Drinks were well made. Will definitely be willing to give them another try.“

Occasionally you can catch a live band. Games are always on the TVs. We went and caught an amazing live band and stayed well after dinner to have drinks! Get the potato chips to start, the dipping sauce is great. I had the burrata BLT, with balsamic and was not disappointed. Chicken Cesar salad was great with a giant crouton. Fun spot!“
