“What a great place! Right on the water. Lively atmosphere. Live music, great menu choices. Place was packed for dinner at 5pm! The food was excellent. (I had blackened Mahi) They have valet parking available. Several tables are "community tables" - so they may seat others waiting at your table if enough open seats. But it's all very friendly like. This is an outdoor, fresh air, tiki hut! And they have a gift shop! Really liked this place & would definitely return.“

“Finally checked this place out for a cocktail on the way to dinner after driving by a thousand times over the years. Definitely fits the dive bar mantra but actually pretty nice inside. We got lucky and got the couch and a couple of chairs. We did not have food but the menu looked great with most items $10 or less. Also no music while we were there. The drinks were excellent and well made and under $10. We had a Negroni, old fashioned, Cosmopolitan and a beer and they do not use the cheap stuff. The Negroni had Carpano Antica Vermouth.Bartender was cordial and engaging. I can where parking could be tough. We’ll be back“

“I always sit at the bar. The main bartender is cool and chill, and has good things to say. I think of him as the writer in old editions of Men's Health magazine, "Jimmy the Bartender".The french onion soup is very tasty, and the beef strogunoff and meat loaf are 100%. I am here at least once a month.“

“I frequent this particular Geckos for lunch often and sit at the bar. Marissa is the best bartender in Sarasota! She is so good at her job and has exceptional customer service skills. She is a hard worker and can handle a full bar plus some tables without missing a beat, she keeps everyone happy and their drinks full. The food is excellent and consistent, they all do a wonderful job there, I highly recommend this restaurant!“

“First time in with friends in the biz. The location in the small strip shopping center on Osprey offers plenty of parking. Outside seating is limited to a few tables on the walkway, so inside is the answer. Inside it's a bit dark, with lots of dark wood snd heavy magenta curtains and paint - reminiscent of old world pubs. Seating at the front is limited to three booths (4 max) and assorted wood tables. The long bar is inviting and there is "shelf" & stool seating across from the bar facing the wall. The rear area offers high tops. It's small but cozy. Service was prompt and friendly but oddly rotated among three staff members who weren't sure what occurred prior to their arrival at the table. The bartender delivered our food. Weird... The menu offers a terrific selection of appetizers/starters and some salads, "pies", sandwiches and wraps. But you're probably heading here for the list of burgers and chicken sandwiches prepared about 15 equally enticing ways. And a really nice beer list with rotating offerings on tap. We shared fried pickles (very good), and the poutine with fried cheese curd and English gravy (excellent). Beers included a Babycakes Oatmeal Stout (Walking Tree Brewery, Vero Beach Florida) and lots of La Playita German pilsner (The Tank Brewing, Miami, Florida) We all ordered different burgers - Caramelized Onion & Brie, British w/Stilton, shrooms & onions, Garlicky Mushroom, bacon & Brie, and a Horseradish cheddar & bacon. All delicious. Fries are crispy and yummy. Onion rings were tasty but very oily. Really nice burger spot. Need to try some pie next visit.“

“Was visiting from out of town when we stumbled into this establishment. The bartenders and patrons were very friendly. Scalawags Bar • $
1112 Whitfield Ave, Sarasota - 7.57 miles

“Happened across Scalawags after doing a quick Google search of the name while in Sarasota area. Came in about noon on a Wed, just a few mixed age locals there, friendly people, fun and good laughs! Mainly a pool tables and electronic games type bar, dimly lit. Kitchen opens about noon, had a beer on tap and ordered the Grouper Sub, which was great - would get it again. Had another beer. Cash only for Papa Ron's food menu. Bar service is Scalawags, pay separately from food - works for them and me - no problem. Will return!!BTW - The Scalawags name came to mind because of the recent Gasparilla fest in Tampa and also because there is a Scalawags Whiefish & Chips in Mackinaw City, MI that a good friend of mine created, owned and operated for 30 years - serves the BEST fresh-caught Great Lakes Whitefish anywhere! So if you ever go there - you won't be disappointed there either!“

“I like this place! I go to Gecko in different locations and I like the atmosphere and the service. I was happy to have Peter assisting us. Attentive, professional, dedicated! This time I chose a margherita flatbread, well done, yummy, the dough a little drier than my preference, but it didn't take away from the overall flavor. Congratulations to the Geckos’ team who try to maintain the standard of the restaurants.Parking: Parking exclusively for customers“

“Went during the day on a boiling hot day. Black as night inside, and icy cold. Sticky floor and bad decor. YEAH! Just what a great dive bar should be like. Friendly bartender. The requisite old dudes at the end of the bar who looked like they were there every day, permanently buzzed. No food available. Love it.“

“The pub is located in a small strip center that is a bit rundown. You can't determine if they are open from the front windows. Try the door, they are probably open. My son-in-law and I visited them on Easter Sunday and they were open,Premier Football (soccer) matches draw patrons. There are an ample amount of tables but most of the crowd sits at the bar positioning themselves for proper screen viewing. We sat at a table with countertop chairs. You can smell that smoking has been allowed, although none of the customers were imbibing at the time. I also did not see ashtrays at the bar. Our goal was simple, order an authentic English Breakfast. Champions appear to be a basic mom-and-pop restaurant. Pop takes the orders and tends bar, mom is in the kitchen preparing orders. I ordered a small breakfast which I will share in an attached photo. The order was huge. The full breakfast has an additional egg and double meat. English breakfasts include eggs, fried bread or toast, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, bangers, and ham. I suggest ordering a small breakfast unless you are beyond hungry.I have been fortunate to enjoy a proper English Breakfast in the UK and what Champions prepares is the real deal. One of the others ordered curry chicken and I'm disappointed that I didn't try it, but it is on my list for the next time I visit. Bottom line, I highly recommend Champions Pub if you enjoy British food, or enjoy European Football. I will rate this a five-star meal, but overall I will give it a four only because of the smoking atmosphere.“

“Awesome experience here! We only stopped in for drinks, but we were given a great table, and quick. Our waitress' name was Dre I believe and she was a blast. She even helped me create a drink when I needed something with energy. Ended up with some coconut red bull and raspberry Stoli. Also they have a waiter there that looks just like Tim Robinson. I thought that was pretty awesome, I almost asked for a pic, but I'd have needed a few more drinks ?“

“Always located in shopping/strip malls, outside seating and paint colors carbon copied from SC to FL (Florida - Beefs home) - so search pointed Kelly green wooden highlights, usually two to three stores down from a chain supermarket - and you're likely to bump into one. There's no hostess - signage reads "seat yourself at any clean table", the locals consider the menu "very exciting" and I read it by it's pictures, scanning two pages at a time in a childishly circumloqusacious manner. Lunch on the back with desserts the previous page and I'm wondering who orders the Strawberry Margaritas and the Original Ruben?, on St. Patrick's Day perhaps but not before nor after. Beefs they say used to not serve hard liquor, but you can get any drink you want now - it's the "family friendly" initial concept that kept the booze and booze hounds out, but Beefs loosened up on that issue eventually. I always picture a buff Irishman being the owner that throws the fellow in the corner out upon his derriere, who moments prior fell asleep with his face slumped down in the peanut bowl because he had too many spirits. But that doesn't happen and they do not have bar peanuts, but I'm always fantasizing and dreaming up scenarios in my head but maintaining conversation - sort of. Just a lot of nods of "yes" and verbal "how interesting"ings.Boneless wings bother me - they are just weird to me, why not call them something else? Baby Legs or Small Stumps or Mini Pegs? I dunno. But until the day they pry my final wing from my cold dead fingers, I'm always and forever going bone in baby. These three bite wings are a mixed bag of the jumbo party pack wings and the next size down, my preferred size. I always ask to not be served the big jumbo drummettes, I can't stand them, they're so obnoxious - and they never listen to me, nobody seems to listen to me nor my requests. Not the waitress and not the cooks apparently, always ignore my simple and quite unobtrusive request about the size and they ignore my "extra crispy" request as well and I find this disturbing. But if I complain, I'll get agitated and then it builds and it's better to not even get me going, I know this those that know me know this - no need for the volcano to erupt over poor order taking and preparing. I guess I get agitated because nobody listens anymore, but not believe me, I'll try not to deceive you, but I've always got so many things to say.I believe my current record on Wings Wednesday at Beefs is three for five or four for six, thereby having consumed generously from top down on their wing meter that depicts heat levels, it's pictures within the menu. I've steered clear from the top of the thermometer, the reddest color (I'm coming for you soon Mr. Atomic Wing) because I always go with her and although I've already eaten and drank and made merry multiple times in her presence, she's still a classy lady and to go high on the heat index would require many of Beefs big beers, then perhaps feeling a bit tipsy I'll be distracted from what she's saying and look around at all of the big TV screens because I don't have a television at home. So she'll drop me off and go shopping and pick me up and drive me home - when that day comes, and it's coming soon, she's so agreeable with me and I haven't a clue as to why.“
