“Slide Inn-Cape Canaveral-4-Stars-No Food "Whenever someone asks me if I want water with my Scotch, I say I'm thirsty, not dirty." -- J. E. Lewis "Oh, Great," I thought as my random eating place generator spat forth yet another "sports bar & grill" as next up to be reviewed on what seems to be my never-ending quest to visit every single slop house, greasy spoon and otherwise food slinging establishment on the Space Coast. At least Just Slide Inn was up in Cape Canaveral, and I just love the drive up there as well as the sites once I get there. Not expecting all that much from the food, just hoping it was edible, I pulled into their parking lot. Walking inside, I was pleased to notice it was a smoke-free place and lacking any olfactory evidence, began to wonder if the kitchen was open. Taking a stool at the bar, I asked the barkeep when the kitchen opened. She turned to answer and I suddenly got a feeling of deja vu. She introduced herself as Jaden and informed me that they no longer served food, but that they had a full bar. Shrugging my shoulders I asked her what kind of Scotch they had on hand. "Johnny Walker Red Label", she replied. As no other distilleries were mentioned, I gathered that that was the only Scotch they had (hardly what I would call a full bar). Asking for a Johnny Walker Red--neat, I sat back and exchanged chit-chat with the mixologist. Jaden gave me a very, very generous pour. As the conversation continued I noticed that she was extremely charming, bubbly, funny and very much at ease in her chosen profession. During the course of small talk, we realized that we had met somewhere before back in the 90s. Not being able to place where we knew each other from, we continued to get reacquainted as I turned my attention to the interior of the establishment. With tons of big screens lining the walls, pool tables, dart boards, arcade games, and an outdoor patio area, Just Slide Inn is a great place for hanging out with your buddies, tossing back a few drinks and watching the game. I really loved the outdoor area...it reminded me of hanging out at a buddy's house in high school and slamming a case of beer or three (the drinking age then was 18). In short, this is a great sports bar with charming staff and ample space in which to have a great time. The reason they got a 3.75 Star review is solely due to the fact that for a "full bar" they had a very limited selection of ambrosia (Scotch) and not one single malt either (harrumph)! The Big Boy says, "For suave servers and fun times enjoying a game or two, slide in (yes, I did) to Just Slide Inn up in Cape Canaveral and give my regards to Jaden!" #iamthebigboy #bigboydiningout“

“Salt & Sweet Restaurant 3092 Lake Washington Rd., Melbourne, FL 32934
5 Stars
I know that the Iron Curtain came down a long time ago, however, it took me years to not see Eastern Europe as a bleak, gray, bullet ridden wasteland peopled by hunched over women in scarfs. These days, I see it as a vibrant, colorful area of the Globe with oft-untouched treasures. That said, I do NOT think of fine dining when I think of Poland. I think meat, potatoes, dumplings and cabbage. I wager you do as well. The fare at Salt & Sweet in Melbourne, FL, has shattered that perception.
Roxanne is my server today. I found her to be extremely honest and hospitable. She answered all of my questions regarding the menu without hesitation. I ordered a bowl of Tomato soup, a Polish Sampler and one of their Special Polish Dishes, Zrazy Polskie.
While awaiting Roxanne's return, I took in the ambiance. I loved the décor and the old-world feel it exuded. The room was so charming that I half-expected someone's Babcia to emerge from the kitchen, berating staff with a cast-iron skillet in hand. Sadly (depending on how you look at it), it was Roxanne and not a loving Babcia who emerged bearing our Polish nutriment.
First to grace the Big Boy's palate was the Tomato soup. Unlike some soups, this was not inspissated, but instead had the perfect viscosity for a Tomato soup and the flavor was complex, savory, and extensive in its taste.
Next, I turned my attention to the Polish Sampler. This includes Pierogi, Golabki and Polish Sausage. At this time, I insist you look at those pictures. Yes, everything looked delectable. On this platter, the Pierogi are Polish-style and not Russian. These are filled with seasoned, minced meat and topped with sauteed onions. By far, some of the best Pierogi I have scarfed down. Never having had Golabki, I was delightfully surprised by the intricate flavors washing over my tongue. This is a Polish delight of meat-stuffed cabbage rolls topped with tomato sauce. In a word, this was, "Wow." Forcing myself onto the Polish sausage it was robust yet frangible.
I turned my utensils on the Zrazy Polskie. This consisted of rolled beef stuffed with bacon, sauteed onions, dill pickles and bell peppers. This is a pretty typical "Gourmet" dish of Eastern Europe. I first encountered its German cousin, Rouladen. This was also out of this world. Everything was prepared with care and love and cooked perfectly. What else can I say?
The Big Boy says, "Leave your expectations at home and experience Polish fine dining at its best!"“

“Thai Koji, 2330 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne, FL 32935 4.5 Stars Holy Rainbow Roll, Batman! Yet another Thai/Japanese combo hash house was staring at me from my random name generator. I have to fix this; all I'm getting lately are these places and Tex-Mex joints. This time, I was heading OTB to sample the fares offered at Thai Koji off of N. Wickham Rd. in Melbourne, FL. After being seated, handed a menu and assured my server would be right with me, I took a few pictures of the place and got ready to snap some of the menu. When I opened it, much to my surprise, I had committed a deterrational act. In so doing, I uncovered a leader in the Thai/Japanese cohort. As previously mentioned, I have a relative currently residing in Thailand. They have assured me on numerous occasions that two things you never find in a restaurant there are chopsticks and sushi. This place knew that and had two DISTINCT menus: Japanese and Thai, leaving little room for discussion. Am was our waiter for the meal and other waitstaff should take lessons from this man. He was exceptional in every category in which a server can be ranked. Well done, Good Sir! I asked Am for some Chicken Satay, Pad Kra Pow Stir Fry w/minced pork and a Lobster Roll. Sitting back and taking in the chill vibe, I wasn't too long before Am was seen returning with my feastage. I quickly dug in as the fusillade of fabulous fragrances ambushed my olfactory nerves. The Chicken Satay consisted of huge pieces of breast meat skewered, grilled to perfection and paired with a delicious Thai peanut sauce. The cucumber salad served on the side was fresh, crisp and delightful, consisting of freshly sliced and chopped cucumber, tomatoes and red pepper in a delicious dressing of Thai flavors. Next up was the Pork Pad Kra Pow Stir fry and this was also wonderful. The minced pork was tender, the rice was perfectly steamed and the side spring roll was a treat to my taste buds. The complex flavors in the Pad Kra Pow were executed flawlessly and stimulated my palate as only correctly prepared Thai food can. Moving on to the final item to be tasted on this foray into the sea of Thai/Japanese combo places, I direct your attention to the Lobster Roll. First, please take a peek at the picture of said roll. It is certainly a work of art to the discerning eye. With krab inside, fresh tuna on top and a wonderful spicy sauce drizzled to top it off, it looked far better than it tasted. I am fairly sure I got the last Lobster tail in the freezer as it came off slightly freezer-burned. If it weren't for that tiny, albeit important detail, this would have been a 5-star meal. The Big Boy says, "In a pool with a myriad of choices for Thai/Japanese places to dine, make a point to visit this one."“

“Banana River Cafe, 1301 S. Patrick Dr., Satellite Beach, FL 32937 5 Stars I swore four years ago I would never go back, yet here I am like fish from yesterfang in the parking lot of a restaurant that at one time (under previous ownership) was my number one breakfast place in Brevard County. After it was sold, it was turned into a joint that wallowed in bad food and even worse service. As I said, that was four years ago. I have since deleted that review. Now, I can say that it is safe to return to the water, but I get ahead of myself. What changed? The new owner/chef is a CIA graduate who did his externship at Michelin Star restaurant Gramercy Tavern in New York City. Emerson Krause turned down a position at the famed restaurant upon graduation to return home and bring Brevard a taste of things seldom sampled in this part of the Sunshine State. I can safely speak for all of my fellow Floridians on the Space Coast when I say, "Thank you, Emerson and welcome home!" After being seated at a delightfully decorated table (I love the paint scheme on the chairs), we were approached by a charming lady named Nicole. Nicole was outstanding in every way a service professional should be. I asked Nicole for an order of the Bacon Sea Salt French Toast, one Texan Potato Stack and a San Antonio Biscuit Bennie. Snapping a few quick pics of the warm environs, I sat back, soaked in the peaceable atmosphere and awaited Nicole's return. The aromas were enticing to such a degree; it was all I could do to take some pictures before digging into the edible artwork before me. First to saunter across my palate was a taste of the Bacon Sea Salt French Toast. One taste and I was deep in Hog Heaven. That bacon! While I love "meat candy" more than almost any other animal flesh, that is not what set this order of the tried and true breakfast staple of French Toast apart. It was the bread and execution. This bread was fresh, thick and griddled to a delightful golden brown. The outside had just the right amount of crunch, while the inside was airy, fresh and wonderfully warm. I could eat this every day and never tire of it. Heaving a sad sigh of regret, I moved on to the next dish to be sampled, the Texan Potato Stack. Every Potato Stack is served with eggs over easy on herb roasted potatoes and topped with jack cheddar cheese sauce with your choice of toast or biscuit. The Texan came with added chorizo, onion, peppers, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. One bite and again, I was done. The flavors cascaded down my gullet like so many drops of gastronomical gratification. The last to dance across my taste buds this morning was the San Antonio Biscuit Bennie. I won't bore you with any more details; suffice it to say that this was on par with the rest of the meal. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavor combinations were unparalleled in a breakfast biscuit (if this still qualifies as such). The Big Boy says, "If it is breakfast or lunchtime, stop what you are doing and go there right now."“

“Crackers Island Grille- Cape Canaveral- 3-stars "Flawless execution will trump low-quality ingredients every time." -- The Big Boy "Where will I lunch today?", was my thought as I grabbed my random restaurant generator and headed towards the BBDO mobile. As the name scrawled across my screen, I saw I was heading up the coast to Cracker's Island Grille. Taking my time and enjoying the drive, I had time to reflect a bit on my job. Since I started this over two years ago, BBDO has grown by leaps and bounds topping out at over 14K followers across social media. I am extremely humbled by this and it steels me to continue forward. My GPS told me I had arrived and I found myself in front of a strip mall 1 mile north of the famous Ron Jon's Surf Shop and across from Golf N Gator. I arrived in the BBDO mobile at precisely 11:15 AM and the place was busy. Awaiting my turn, I glanced about the place and was quite taken in by the decor. They have a nice little island/surf theme going and this contributed to a very relaxed atmosphere. After a short wait, I was shown a table, handed a menu and told my server would be right with me. As packed as they were, I wondered what exactly that meant. It wasn't too long before a server approached my table and introduced herself as Brittany. Brittany was very prompt, charming and had our drink order back in no time at all. Along with the drink order, I also requested the Bouillabaisse and one order of the special of the day, Gator tacos (wondering if the meat was fresh based on the proximity of Golf N Gator). Brittany assured me this was not the case. I was sure this made the animal rights people happy, however, I was not. I have to say that first of all, Cracker's Bouillabaisse looked better on the menu than it did in front of me (see pictures for comparison). But, the smells wafting up were pure gourmand nirvana. With just the right amount of heat and all the seafood one could want, the flavors were complex, tantalizing and just a tad hot on the palate. The seafood seemed low quality (frozen, not fresh), but the execution was performed well. The accompanying bread was warm and slathered in garlic butter that added a nice compliment to the seafood stew. Dying to try something I never have before, I eagerly dug into the Gator tacos next. Wow. That is my professional opinion of these delightful tacos. Just, wow. Served on warm flour tortillas with fresh-cut tomatoes and cooked to perfection they were absolutely as delicious as they were unique. The meat was tender, juicy and extremely flavorful. The seasoning really got my taste buds dancing and there was just enough heat to make sure they were not only awake but stayed that way for the duration. The Gator tacos alone were worth the drive up the coast. Not that one needs an excuse for that. As I am sure my loyal readers know, I firmly believe that the only thing that matters in regards to a successful slop house and one that fails is execution, not location, not parking, not service, not interior design (though those all certainly help). If the food is good, as I've said before, you could open a food shack in the middle of the Okefenokee Swamp and people would flock to it. Make no mistake about it, Cracker's is not a fine dining establishment, they use low-quality ingredients, but man oh man you can tell the chef/cook cares about what is slung forth from his kitchen. The execution of all the items I had was done flawlessly, and everything was delicious, especially the Gator Tacos, those were unreal, proving once again what I've said ad nauseum, execution, execution, execution! The Big Boy says, "when in the area and in the mood for some cheap eats and seafood, head on over to Cracker's Island Grille, you won't be disappointed!" #iamthebigboy #bigboydiningout“

“This food is so much better then Camp Lejeune. I mean common USMC. I retired in 2016 and was used to getting soggy chicken wings and a salad Buffett run by people with autism. By autism I mean an E5 Navy SK got njp for hooking up with a disabled person. This chow is great. I do believe management needs a kick in the butt for only keeping one elderly white person on the pizza area while the usual Filipino Mafia and crew get to chit chat on the food line not even caring to offer a helping hand. I had a female 04 and male 05 agree with me on this watching her bust her butt. Great food needs better leadership. Oh yeah the views the bees knees.“
