“Masao is hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Iowa. The sushi is on another level, easily the freshest ingredients you’ll find anywhere around here. You can truly taste the quality in every bite. I ordered the J-Pablo roll, and my wife had the Volcano roll , both were absolutely phenomenal. The flavors were perfectly balanced, fresh, and packed with creativity. You can tell there’s real skill and care behind every dish that comes out of the kitchen. We also decided to try something from the French side of the menu and shared the mushroom gnudi… and wow. That was seriously one of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in a very long time. We were talking about it the rest of the night and still are. If you’re looking for a place that delivers both quality and a unique dining experience, Masao is it. We already can’t wait to go back.“

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sakari Sushi is hands down my favorite place for sushi in Des Moines! The food is always incredibly fresh, and the sushi is the best in town, no question. What really sets this place apart is the staff. They’re phenomenal, friendly, attentive, and always moving with purpose. You’ll never catch anyone just standing around; they’re constantly making sure everything runs smoothly and guests are taken care of. Special shoutout to our bartender Jake for mixing up the best drinks. His Painkiller cocktail is an absolute must-try! Whether you're a sushi lover or just looking for a great night out, Sakari never disappoints.“

“I love sushi and I had been on many sushi places From San Francisco Ca, Guadalajara Jal and this one Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Des Moines IA and this one was special different and I loved it; Not only the food, the service was exceptional, the lady that helped me was amazing cause when she learned was my first time there she gave me edamame and the way the do it was a little different, I loved it; all the rolls were amazing but the one that I loved the most was the one with cucumber that I forgot the name, but was not all; honestly I could not finished all and she told me let me put this for you to go, OMG this beautiful lady packed my stuff really well even I got this lil plate for the soy sauce, so I really recommend this place to eat there or even to go, cause their service and the food is exceptional, and definitely if I am close I going to come again, thanks !!!!“

“Okay, so some of the best Asian food you will get. Fried rice- felt like I was back home eating some fresh, delicious food made by my mom, kind of like that scene in Ratatouille. Sushi is good too. EXPECT to wait for a long time (like if it's really busy, you could be waiting 30-45 minutes) because it's just a two people cooking, but it is so worth it. Delicious!“

“I wish Mandarin Grill was closer to my house - or maybe not, because I would be a regular to an alarming degree. I’ve eaten lunch here multiple times in the past month and still haven’t hit the point of “that’s enough.” If anything, I’m getting more committed and now I’ve started working through their Korean/Chinese specialty menu. Honestly, it’s been a very successful journey.
I brought my kids a few weeks ago and now they keep begging for a return trip. The only snag is I can really only make it for lunch - but luckily, their lunch pricing is super reasonable, so that works out in my favor.
I’m fully locked in on the spicy edamame and crabmeat rangoons. The edamame hits the spot - not too garlicky and not “you’ll taste this tomorrow” levels. I usually eat a few and then take the rest home so they can soak up more of that spicy soy garlic situation. Addicting midnight snack behavior. The rangoons are packed with cream cheese (not like other places that skimp on the good stuff) and are more savory, not weirdly sweet. So. Freaking. Good.
At this point, I’ve basically run through all their yellow curries - combo, beef, chicken - and even trued some fried tofu off a friend’s plate. I’m not typically a tofu person, but the sauce could carry anything. I’d eat it off a flip-flop if it came down to it (…not proud but just being honest).
A few standouts from the Korean/Chinese specialty menu: stir-fry potatoes, bibimbap, and kimchi fried rice. The potatoes are a problem - in the sense that regular potatoes now feel like a total letdown. If you haven’t tried potatoes this style, I highly recommend. Bibimbap is everything-in-one-bowl with an egg on top, and somehow it’s just as good (maybe better?) reheated.
I’m definitely forgetting a few dishes, but lately I’ve also been on a bento box kick at lunch - little bits of everything, which feels like the correct life choice for me so I can sample several things. Bento boxes are organized heaven, neatly sectioned off like a proper plate should be. 🍱
What else is on their menu that I should try? I’m making my way through the whole dang thing at this point.“

“Serious about allergies! I have an allergy so I can’t go out to eat much, which in itself is heartbreaking. However, from the moment I walked in the door, they were already preparing to make sure I could have a safe meal with my family. They took all the precautions they could and kept me informed the entire time. It nearly brought tears to my eyes! The kindness and thoughtfulness I experienced was so overwhelming so thank you to everyone who made my dinner possible! I’m so appreciative. We were a very large party, and even so, they succeeded! Everyone was soo happy with their meals! Great job!“

“Cool Basil has been a long time favorite of my wife and I. We hadn’t been there in a while when we stopped in for lunch today. The atmosphere was noticeably different. They were playing a funky smooth jazz music where every song sounded the same. I liked the previous light/classic rock mix much better. The staff seems to have completely changed since we were last in. We didn’t recognize anyone, whereas we were on a first name basis with much of the previous staff. The service was noticeably slower and less friendly. The food was still very good. I ordered my usual spice level 2 and it was very, very hot. Much hotter than it used to be. I’m just wondering if they are under new ownership or management because it is a very different experience from a year ago. I still recommend Cool Basil, it’s just not the familiar place that we loved anymore.“
