“Looking for a night out without going downtown or west Glenn? This is the place. Karaoke on Tuesday, trivia on Wednesday. Lots of regulars including myself. We don’t bite and love a good time. Unlike other places, you won’t get weird looks for being new here. 4 Pool tables, 2 dart boards, 3 slot machines with Ridgemont tickets (each worth a dollar at the bar). It’s a good sized place so you can find your own area or chat with a new friend. I’m an honest guy, worst thing about this place is the urbandale and Windsor heights cops linger because they smell a good time. Just get a ride if you have too much fun.“

“The flour taco is by far the best!!! We don't frequent often as we really can only do a date night. We have came on a weekend with kids and they enjoyed the food but really not very family friendslly with seating choices and it just the darkness. No kids meals. But if the main aspect is more of a bar I totally understand and respect that. Also the blonde bartender/server rocks it. And so friendly.“

“Our first trip to Captain Roy's to hear THE CROWFOOT RAKES. We'd heard about the tenderloins, and golly are they great. Thin pieces of meat with very light breading, and they are huge! It's amazing with so many people there on a Sunday afternoon how quickly the bar lines went. We'll be back!“

“Stopped in for a bite to eat with some co-workers. The atmosphere was very welcoming, an at home sit down kind of place to watch sports TV. The theme through out the bar was baseball for the most part. I got a bacon burger with loaded fries, it was very delicious. If I'm back in the area I will definitely go again! “Average bar with room for 20 or so at bar , tv for ball games easy to see. Barmaid was pleasant. Was there on Sat at 4 pm for fundraising event for Dog rescue company. Didn't order anything to eat since they were walking around with fish , tater tots etc they were cooking out back. Didn't look out back but it looks like there's an area where you can go out there probably good for the summer months.“

“A week or so ago my family placed a large online order. My wife picked the order up and brought it home. When we got everything separated we realized some items were missing. Both my wife and I tried calling the restaurant several times due to living 20-plus minutes away but could only get a busy signal. My wife ended up going back to the restaurant. The young lady my wife spoke with was very apologetic about the entire situation and extremely kind. Despite having to go back for a couple of things, the young lady's handling of the situation and the food being great more than made up for everything. We will for sure return in the future.“

“The east side of the river really isn’t dirty anymore. It’s been gentrified with your typical cookie cutter businesses and people. I enjoyed my Saturday afternoon visit. The prices are typical with the area. The bartender was on point and it wasn’t to sticky. For me the ambience wasn’t what I expected. Numerous bachelorette parties and those people that ride that drinking wagon thing came and went. A privileged frat boy sorority girl feel but maybe it was just the day. Without the patio I don’t think I’d bother with the place and I wonder what happens in the winter 3/4s of their seating disappears. I’ll swing in again to enjoy a nice patio evening but maybe on a weekday instead.“

“Wow, this was some of the best food I've had in Des Moines. Their ranch brussel sprouts app will make anyone fall in love with brussel sprouts. Going early during happy hour was great because it was pretty chill and quiet in the restaurant, and it didn't get loud till the buzz from the drinks had set in. Had the mojo pork sandwich with fries and it was very tasty, although next time I think I'll try something different.“

“Cheese Bar is my favorite restaurant. I like it for the friendly staff, excellent service, knowledgeable chef, and of course delicious food. They clearly train their people well and are all very kind and relaxed. Their food and beverages have been consistently well prepared and tasty for over 6 years. I love it!“

“Well I haven't been here in over 20 years but it hasn't changed one single bit. The dogs are still playing cards and pool on the walls and the booths are the same just a whole lot more worn. Actually the booth had a huge hole in the seat that you could see clear to the floor. The seating was missing tiles and you could see large holes in the ceiling too. It really didn't bother me because you expect this here...it was however the first time I have ever been here with the lights turned up. It definitely needs to have the light on much lower... The only other thing is the back door you have to enter from since the city removed most of the parking. It is so dangerous. The concrete is deteriorating and broken and the steps are very scary. I suspect people fall back there regularly...But over all it brought back fond memories of times long ago!!!“

“Drink was way more alcohol than flavor. Pool was fun, customers were friendly. Server was friendly and attentive. Bar itself - loved the writing, good space for people, but it could’ve used a bit cleaning - especially in the bathroom. Long hours which is nice so you don’t feel like you’re being kicked out. Music was a bit repetitive but not a big deal. I would be back if we lived closer to the area.“

“This is a fun little bar if you're headed to a concert at Val Air. It's full of regulars But we didn't feel judged as outsiders as we walked in. It's an old building with a dive bar feel But there are certain things that make it feel like someone really cares. For example the drinks like screwdrivers and greyhounds are made with fresh squeezed juice, the bartender rotates the glasses, and everyone has greeted as they walk in the door. The only downside is that it's a cash only bar and the ATM was down so we had to leave.“

“Cracking little place this, a real hidden gem in Ankeny. Myself and my fiancé stopped in purely by chance to grab some food and a couple of drinks and fell in love with the place. The staff are attentive and really friendly, the food was really good and most importantly the beer was perfect in a frozen glass. Has a real charm to the place that I think alot of bigger drinking establishments lack. As an Englishman, I'm no stranger to the "local pub" and this just has those vibes in spades. Just feels like you should know everyone by name and feels like you should of been drinking here forever. A really charming place that I'll definitely be coming back to when I return to Ankeny.“
