“I came all the way from California for St. Patrick’s Day and somehow ended up having one of the most memorable Italian dinners of my life at Rosebud on Taylor Street.

The night started with me confidently ordering… a salad. Just a salad. The host paused, looked at me, and said, “That’s it?” while the rest of my table went full Italian feast mode. I was already laughing and also slightly questioning my own decisions.

But I absolutely made the right call. The burrata and prosciutto with arugula salad was hands down one of the best salads I’ve ever had. Fresh, flavorful, perfectly balanced. I’m still thinking about it.

Everyone at the table ordered something different. The bruschetta had a real flair for flavor. The cacciatore was incredible. There was one more dish that was so good I honestly forgot the name because we were too busy enjoying ourselves.

The drinks were also great. The kind where you say you’ll just have one and suddenly you’re fully living in the moment.

What really made the experience unforgettable though was the atmosphere and the staff. The managers were dressed in sharp black and brown suits, which gave the whole restaurant this classic old Italian movie vibe. Not in a cheesy way. In a timeless, elegant, you feel like you just walked into a scene kind of way.

At the same time, the servers were warm, attentive, and constantly checking on us. Everyone made us feel welcome, joked with us, and treated us like we had been coming there for years. It felt personal and genuine.

Ending my Chicago trip with dinner here before flying home the next day was the perfect finale. Amazing food, great drinks, incredible hospitality, and an atmosphere I won’t forget.

“My time at Il Vicolo Trattoria was excellent! It only took a couple of minutes to find a table at 5 PM on a weekday, and the wait staff was friendly, attentive, and answered all my questions. “In 2017, I picked up my older brother at Midway to come home to the funeral of our youngest brother that committed suicide at 23 yers old. We swung over to Vito and Nick's to get a pizza and talk. It was our first time there. We ended up telling the waitress the situation because we had both been crying. Next thing we know, the kitchen had par-baked like 8 large pizzas of all types, and gave us a hand-written note giving us condolences and instructions on how to finish baking the pizzas. “Pablo, our waiter, was exceptional. During our first visit here, he warmly welcomed us and showcased impressive knowledge of the menu, even extending to items not listed. He encouraged us to customize our meal to our liking, and he certainly delivered! For starters, we chose the grilled calamari and Rockefeller oysters. The calamari was tender and impeccably cooked, steering clear of the typical rubbery texture. Opting for balsamic instead of oil was a perfect choice. The oysters were superb, not overwhelmed with cheese. I ordered the veal picatta from the menu, expecting a thin slab, but was pleasantly surprised by the generous portion size. The angel hair pasta complemented the dish well, although I could have done without the mushrooms – a personal preference, which I should've mentioned. Nonetheless, if you're a mushroom enthusiast, they give you plenty. My boyfriend ordered off-menu, enjoying the Zuppe di Pesce with shrimp, clams, extra calamari, and rigatoni Diablo style in red sauce. It was absolutely amazing and satisfied his taste without being overly spicy. To accompany the meal, I had a glass of the house Chardonnay, which was light and buttery. Even my boyfriend, who doesn't typically drink wine, enjoyed it. “I stopped by Pop's Italian Beef today with my usual plan of attack — the legendary ribeye steak sandwich that normally has my name written all over it. But then I saw the sign…

“Mondays in March – 46th Anniversary Special.”

And suddenly my carefully crafted sandwich strategy went right out the window. Instead of the steak sandwich, I audibled and went with three of the cheeseburger specials, because at those prices it felt almost irresponsible not to participate in the celebration.

Apparently the entire population of Lyons had the exact same idea.

The place was absolutely slammed. The poor girls behind the counter — Cecilia and Celeste — were running around in circles like contestants in the Italian Beef Olympics. Orders flying, people everywhere, the grill working overtime. They were hustling nonstop and doing their best to keep the whole operation moving.

Because of the anniversary madness, I ended up waiting quite a while for my food. At one point I started wondering if I might still be standing there when they roll out the banner for their 47th anniversary.

But when the burgers finally arrived? Totally worth it. Juicy, cheesy, messy in the way a proper burger should be — the kind where you need a pile of napkins and absolutely no dignity while eating it.

So yes, the wait was real, but between the great food, the anniversary chaos, and Cecilia and Celeste working like absolute champions, it was still a memorable stop.

Pro tip: If you see an anniversary special at Pop’s… bring your patience. The reward at the end is still delicious.“
