Fred's Bread Bakery & Café Reviews
Incredible hospitality by owners and exceptional quality focus on French ingredients.
Run. Do not walk to Fred's. This is not a 'european style' cafe, or a 'french themed place'. Fred is French. His flour is French, his receipies and techniques are French, and as I found out when I visited last weekend.. all of his ovens and various baking machines have been imported from France too.
Where to begin? The pastries were divine. Fresh, packed with flavour and refreshingly light, I tried my best to taste as many of them as possible but I failed. Though I was...read full review

I come every week. Fred and his wife are delightful and genuine, the atmosphere is so nicely curated from the cups to the ceiling tiles, and they use French flour, which is hard to find in the US. My favorites are the sourdough bread (you can ask them to slice and keep it in your freezer), the cafe crème (cortado) and the pain suisse (also hard to find in the US). Merci à Fred, à sa femme et à tous ceux qui rendent le café possible. À bientôt :)

Fred's Bread Bakery & Café is a French bakery and cafe. Fred is French, and his flour, recipes, and techniques are French. All of his ovens and various baking machines have been imported from France too. The pastries are divine: fresh, packed with flavour, and refreshingly light. The lunch options include Le Parisean (the sandwich), the quiche, the Croque Monsieur sandwich, and the chicken salad croissant. They also serve locally roasted coffee from one of Evanston's own roasting companies, coming in beautiful Vero glasses. Favorites include the sourdough bread, the cafe crème (cortado), the pain suisse, the blueberry danish, the orange blossom cinnamon Bun, the Croque Monsieur sandwich, baguette, coffee, and the chocolate croissants. The ingredients are amazing and the quality of the ingredients and the care to make the food can be appreciated with every bite. The owners are delightful, genuine, kind, and very hospitable. The atmosphere is so nicely curated from the cups to the ceiling tiles, the glasswear, the plates, the cutlery, the chairs, various shapes of table, and even the light fittings are a beautiful metalic shade to compliment the strong 'french blue' accent colours throughout. This independent bakery & cafe is doing absolutely everything right. It is a cute neighborhood bakery with wonderful bread, pastries, coffee, and sandwiches, a wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
