Restaurantji presents Round Lake's standout Mexican dining destinations.
“Great "hole in the wall" joint that you're always looking for, but can never quite find. We had recently moved to the area and were very impressed with the quality and overall flavor of our meals and their salsas. It's can be quiet and somewhat desolate at times, but don't let that steer you away! We thought our alcoholic beverages were a little underwhelming, but we could just have high standards for margaritas. Overall, solid spot to hit if you want some tasty Mexican cuisine!“
“We have ordered from this hidden gem many times , gotten birria tacos , birria Chan , pastor and steak and chicken tacos all phenomenal, now tonight I surprised the wifey and didn’t tell her what I ordered..:. Walked in the house with a bag and a pizza box and she immediately thinks omg pizza again…. Little did she know the extraordinary phenomenon about to open up in front of her the birria pizza/ pizzadilla was outrageously delicious and a giant portion!! 10 for 10 out the park! Congrats this will be my go to on game day and many more!“
“Authentic Tex-Mex food including most favorites, such as tacos, burritos, gorditas, and tomolles. I especially appreciate the well cooked and spiced home-style take of their gorditas. While their portions are not as large as their competitor close by. I believe their dishes more then make up for that with flavor and an authenticity. The homestyle taste rather than the usual standard expected of this type of Mexican restaurant makes them stand out.“
“After growing up within the Latino community, eating authentic Mexican dishes, and learning how to cook within that community, I'm pretty particular about the Mexican food establishments I give my hard-earned cash to, because I know what good Mexican food is and it is often not what you get...Cinco Hermanos gets my money happily! As such, I often have certain requests that may not be on a menu, but I know are doable, based on my knowledge of Mexican cuisine. Not only do they happily receive my request during my phone order, the request is always executed correctly and to my liking. My husband doesn't like certain things in his burrito, and when ordering from other places, those things were either in there, or replaced with other "fillers." He orders the same exact thing every time, so he has often been disappointed...and his requests are easy like no lettuce and no rice inside the burrito...no biggie, right? The first time we ordered the way my hubby likes his burrito, from Cinco Hermanos, not only did they get the order right, they added some extra meat in the burrito as the "filler." That's customer service and attention to detail right there!I love that their tacos ARE NOT GREASY!! We love tacos al pastor, but they are often bathing in grease, which is actually just laziness on the cook's part...I know, because I make them at home, often. I usually don't like to order carryout tacos as a result, because they arrive home soggy and greasy...NOT the experience I've had at Cinco Hermanos! The tortillas rarely have any extra grease on them and the meat is the same. Any tacos I've ever ordered from them arrive home intact, non-soggy, and as delicious as if they were just prepared in my own kitchen!I also really enjoy their green salsa...it tastes like homemade. You can tell that they used fresh ingredients and that it was made in smaller batches. It's hard to explain, but trust me when I say it is one of the best green salsas I've ever had, including some homemade authentic versions. It's a little warmer than most, so be prepared for that, but it is crave-able!If you're looking for a stellar caldo de res, this is the place! Not only did it taste like the thousands of caldo's I've enjoyed in Mexican kitchens over my lifetime, it was served the way you'd be served in said kitchen...plenty of meat and veggies in that delicious broth! My typical experience ordering caldo to-go, is a container with a lot of broth, one or two small pieces of meat, one small carrot, more cabbage than anything, and half a potato...not even enough meat to make a decent taco to eat with the broth. I ordered this one weekend I was sick, and let me tell you, it hit ALL the right spots! Rich broth with an abundance of meat and veggies...exactly the way it would be served in my home kitchen. I was floored when I opened the container and saw it, and then more pleasantly surprised when I tasted it...perfection! Just know that it's only available on weekends and totally worth the wait! Oh, and one of my requests, LOTS of limes, was absolutely fulfilled, happily. Hats off to this place for great customer service!I've not had one thing on the menu that has displeased me, nor has my husband. Not one.Not only is the food delicious, the service is impeccable. I have certain requests when I order carryout, not excessive by any means, just certain things we prefer, like only green salsa and no plastic utensils necessary. At other places we've ordered, 8 out of 10 times, there's a bunch of red salsa in the bag - along with the green - and a bunch of plastic forks that end up in our garbage can. EVERY SINGLE TIME we order from Cinco Hermanos, the instructions are followed to a T, which tells me that they're good business people and not throwing their money in our garbage can. As a business person, I find that smart, admirable, and a likely indicator of how they run their business on every level. Here's a good "tell" if a Mexican restaurant “
“Yummy authentic Mexican food. I had the shrimp burrito bowl and it was so good, I wanna go again tomorrow for lunch. My husband had the steak burrito dinner and he highly recommends it. Service was fast and workers were kind. This will be our go to Mexican place now.“
“They sell the absolute best al pastor and asada tacos I've ever had! If I could rate them higher than 5 stars, I would. Their tortillas are soft with just a tiny bit of crispiness at the edges. The meat to tortilla ratio is top tier. The flavor of the meat when you add just a tiny bit of salsa and lime is wonderful. I love this place!“
“Best Mexican/Texas place I’ve been to. The food is so amazing and has so much flavor to it. Service was great the lady explained the whole menu to me and what I should get. Some of the best queso birria tacos I’ve ever had and the green and red sauce they have is ELITE. Not only is the food phenomenal but they have the best prices and HUGE portions. That house sampler Friday special is $15 (meant for 3 people) and I could barely get through half of it and I don’t play with food I can eat, like a lot! Also I had the Texas Twinkie which was like a jalepeno popper with brisket and cream cheese wrapped in bacon and oh my Lord that HITT THE SPOT. It is a jalepeno so only get if you like spicy. Definitely better than Los comales and el famous burrito this place has a special spot in my heart. 100000/10 must recommend and definitely try the queso birria tacos, house sampler, and Texas twinkie. I promise anyone reading this I have not been paid to write this review nor did they even ask me and this is the first review I’ve written for anything but I had to because this place is BOMBBBB??? the photo is to show the gargantuan size of their chicken wings I could only finish two after eating a queso birria taco and Texas twinkie and some of Texas nachos. The wings are legit like 1.5 pounds each probably got like 60 grams of protein after eating only two lol!! The house sampler could easily feed two grown adult men. Thank you Texas Bebe for the great experience! -Casimir model“
“I came in from out of town and was looking for quick take out. I ordered four pork tamales and chips and guacamole, and I was not disappointed! The tamales are so huge, I got two meals out of the four! Delicious with the salsa, crema, and queso fresco provided with my order. The guacamole was also top notch; nice and chunky with lots of flavor. There is either sit down or counter service, depending on what you’re looking for. If I lived in town, I would definitely be a regular!“
“Ordered for my daughters end of year softball party. Everyone absolutely loved all of it!! We ordered chicken, barbacoa, and steak tacos with tamales. My husband, who LOVES tamales, asked why we didn't order more for just us and the girls and their siblings gobbled all of the tacos up. Every parent asked for contact information. Highly recommend. Hoping to order more in December!!“
“Had such a a great experience here. The waiter was so sweet and attentive. Was very accommodating for our vegan needs. Food was delicious. I got a veggie taco dinner and hubs got a bean burrito. Neither were on the menu but were created for us. The strawberry margarita was very yummy.Vegetarian options: Beans were vegan as well as bean burrito and veggie tacosDietary restrictions: Vegan friendly!!!“
“I was in the neighborhood and decided to try this place which looks kind of bad outside. I am glad I tried it and this review is only my "to-go" experience. Food and service were both top-notch.I ordered 3 tacos just to try: Carnitas, Steak and Chorizo. The carnitas were juicy and well seasoned, The chorizo taco was pretty big and the tasted really good. The steak taco was just average and the meat was a bit dry for my taste.I was pleasantly surprised in general with the taste and how fresh and authentic the salsa was.I will need to stop by again to try a full dish and the quality of the guacamole which looked pretty good when I saw it served at one of the tables. The place is very small (about 10 tables max) and I am wondering if they actually can keep up with the service if they are at full capacity.“
“All the food is amazing but they have the BEST Al Pastor tacos!!! Elote is also amazing. Chorizo tacos have an amazing flavor as well. They have great salsa. I like the mild one and my boyfriend loves the orange sauce- he even got an 8 oz container to go. Service is extremely friendly, accommodating, and appreciative. The atmosphere is small and cute and they make you feel at home. They have specials on Tuesdays for Taco Tuesday! We drive over 30 minutes to get here. I don't typically write reviews but this family owned business deserves all the love!!“
“What can I say, it's the original, and still the best! The new location is phenominal, the walls are all glass for a great view while dining and having a warm, inviting atmosphere. Real authentic Mexican food done right, best place in town!“
“Love the food here, great quality at reasonable prices. The owners are very polite and work hard to get every order done properly. We never have had a problem with their service. I highly recommend the fish tacos and the Tortas.Dietary restrictions: My son has a gluten allergy and this is one of the rare places where he doesn't get sick due to cross contamination. Big reason why we still go here.“
“Great value! My taste buds love their food and their sauces! Take note, each location is different in taste/quality... this is a great one IMO. I can say I have found a better version of a few dishes else where. You can't go wrong with most everything on the menu regardless, even if not the best of the best.“
“I've driven past this place for years until my son and I got dinner there on a whim. Wow, we were missing out! It's cozy inside and the staff is always super-friendly. The burritos, Taco salad, and chimichangas are amazing. You definitely won't leave hungry!“
“This is an absolute hidden gem of Mundelein!!! Everything is seasoned so well, delicious food, priced fairly, great service. We have tried so many Mexican restaurants all over town and this is hands down the best. We’ve eaten here lots of times- the tacos are always amazing, tortas, burritos too. I’ve had a few of the Mexican classic dinners. Never any complaints. Check it out!!“
“We had seen the restaurant when patronizing La Michoacana so we decided to try it out. The restaurant is very clean and bright. I had enchiladas suiza with chicken that was excellent. My companion had the pechuga with vegetables and she could not stop eating it. Even after she said she wanted to "save some". The only "bad" thing is that my diet Coke came in a can and I assume refills would cost more. Otherwise, a great lunch experience and we will be back!!“
“Yum! I love the salsas. Guacamole and chips fresh and delicious. I had an el pastor burrito with everything. It was tasty and hit the spot. Meat was a little fatty, good flavor and not overcooked. I'll be back to try other menu items. Edit-return visit I had mole chicken. Tasty flavors and large portion to enjoy leftovers.“
“Food is consistent with Mexican cuisine the service is above average they could definitely bring the lighting down and warm it up. Maybe fix the booths. They serve a great Margarita all in all we enjoy going thereVegetarian options: We just say no meat lots of veggies to choose from“
“Very nice place, small and family operated. Best Chalupas and Gorditas I've had in a while! been here several times, great Michilada's! small outside seating area and the inside is as well. about 10 tables inside, with a Bar to sit at and maybe 5 outside with sun umbrellas. (for warmer weather.) when it gets busy it can be kinda crowded but the family of about 8 do a great job keeping up! a must go to if you're in the mood for some great Mexican food! Pick your time right and avoid the crowd (unless you're into that kinda thing...) for great food, great, service and a Great atmosphere with delicious drinks! I've had the Chalupas Amazing, Gorditas Excellent, Margaritas Tangy and sweet, ChimiChanga dinner Awesome, try the fresh homemade Salsa And Guacamole! I usually go alone and have a beer before and with dinner, and a drink after dinner and it's usually around $25 to $35 + tipParking: they have an upper and lower parking lot. I've never had a parking issue.“
“I stopped by for the first time at this little shop for a quick bite. Got myself my usual favorite choice, steak burrito. Turns out this shop is a must have! Food so good, felt like it was imported straight from Mexico, no layovers. It was soooo good. It's been over a week and I still think of this little shop.“
“The food is excellent here. I ordered the 3 soft taco plate and the b/f had the Chile rellenos and the Barbacoa chimichunga. You get fresh made chips with homemade salsas. Sooo good. We also ordered the guacamole and more chips. Everything is homemade and very good. Highly recommend!“
“Kareoke and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Google notified me of a past review and photo getting a lot of views. A really diverse menu of solid Mexican, Spanish lunches and dinners. Fantastic deserts and not too busy where you can bring a date or the family and have an excellent experience. Would add a better photo from Butterfield and Rt 45 Vernon Hills Illinois if I had on this device. Some nice ones from Kareoke and dancing on Instagram.“
“5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Stopped inCarlos Mexican Grill in fox lake today to grab a late lunch on my way back home. Fox Lake across from Thortons in the strip mall.Service was outstanding! I’ve heard complaints at other locations, not Fox Lake. Very helpful and patient.Restaurant was very clean. The empty tables were all ready for customers to come in to eat.Decent amount of parking for the strip mall.Menu is laid out nicely. Good variety. Prices are competitive depending on what you get. I didn’t notice anything extremely expensive or inexpensive. I think maybe their fajitas are priced lower than other restaurants in the area. I usually prefer to stay to eat fajitas so maybe next time.Food was not only delicious BUT FILLING! Omgshhhh… I ate half and had to take a nap to sleep ? off my full tummy! Not complaining because the other half was dinner. — eating lunch at Carlos Mexican Grill in fox lake.“
“Probably the only place left where asada tacos are $1.50 everyday not just on "Taco Tuesdays" they use the smaller 4inch Tortilla but they do pile it up with meat 4 of them will get you full. Maybe call ahead to order or just be prepared to wait a bit longer then a actual taco shop, Think they make them made to order which is good and bad. Side note they also had prepaid cold shrimp(Cevichi/Aguachile)by the lbs ready to eat which you don't see very often in mexican grocery stores and looked very delicious. My only criticism was the wait time.“
“I got a coconut banana smoothie. It was really good, I liked it a lot. Perfect level of sweetness and as by the picture, you can tell it's pretty natural. It isn't neon colored and it tasted authentic. I'm going to definitely be returning to try other flavors as well as try their other items“
“This is a great Mexican restaurant in the Chicagoland area. If you're in the neighborhood on Montrose off Oak Park Ave, this is a must. They make their own tortillas right in the restaurant. Always fresh. Interesting to watch also. The restaurant has excellent stained glass windows. The staff are always friendly, accommodating, and quick. I have loved this place every since we installed a new gas service in the restaurant. The owner came out with food for whole crew. Chips and salsa, guacamole, peppers. Tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas for everyone. It was so kind of him. We loved the food and many of the crew came back to eat with their families. It is my wife's favorite. So we come there regularly. I can't say anything bad. This is a restaurant that does it right. God bless. Viva la Mexico.“
“Went to try this place out for lunch and glad I did. Found another place that serves mole and this is pretty good as well. Had Laura as our server and she was awesome, friendly and fast. Ordered more stuffs to go for dinner since just wanna stay in tonight and rest. The place has typical Mexican restaurant decorations and the place was a bit on the darker or dimmer side. Their lengua tacos were good as well as their birreria tacos. I also tried their flan, though I was not a fan of to be honest, everyone has their own preference on how they like their flan but can't say I didn't try. I'll have to come again and try their Caldo de res and compare it with the way other restaurants make it. Over all it was a pleasant experience. I just wish the owner was more acknowledging to her customers and say hi, ask how was everything and smile but she didn't seem approachable and didn't give any acknowledgment even we are right in front of the register and she was behind the cashier checking us out. My reviews are about my overall entire experience from my entrance to the business and to my exit of the business experience. As I always mention on my previous reviews of other businesses, hospitality, friendliness, attentiveness and cleanliness is just as important as serving good foods. Almost a 5 star but the ending was kinda a downer. Was gonna rate 3 stars but that wouldn't be fair to the good service our waitress Laura has given us.“
“Love the food here! But, not great customer Service. The service was pretty fast… But they did not have any cheeseburgers as it said on their menu for the kids meal. I also did not have any chicken nuggets from the kids meal, They also had no Lengua tacos and only enough steak to make three tacos. And I would also recommend updating your website to include that you no longer serve alcohol“
“3lbs carnitas family special rice, beans, 12 handmade tortillas, 1 salsa for $55 we were 4 people had each a drink total $84.00!! We felt it was a little pricey for carnitas but overall good. Everything is expensive when you go out and eat now a days.“
“Great food, great drinks, INCREDIBLE service! My cousin and I met up this weekend to catch up over margaritas and Mexican food and this is where we landed. We had Hailey as our server and she was so sweet and on top of everything! We were there for hours and she always made sure we were good on drinks and refilled our chips when we got low. She was fun and attentive, and to have a great server on top of the delicious food and margs, really made the night so wonderful for us. WE LOVE HAILEY!“
“GRACE WAS AMAZING, even in the face of absolutely chaos. She prevailed. Went with a very large group and they didn't have the staff to handle it but the did it. We have been there ateast 3 times the past week. Food is great, all the servers are friendly and quick. Love it here. We will be back.“
“I love this restaurant the food is a bomb ? ? I would really recommend the fajitas or the chicken burrito? also the Milanese de pollo torta. Really good service waiters are really nice Best tacos and food I have ever tried I woul really recommend coming here ??????????????? I've seen some reviews complain about the kids but I really se no harm in it not bothering anyone owners are really nice people“
“Really enjoyed our food from here. Very authentic dishes. Pozole both red and green available..even saw Blanco as an open! Staff was attentive and hard working. My strawberry margarita was delicious (and eye pleasing!). We order often from door dash as well. We most recently stopped here on Christmas Day..was shocked and appreciative they were open.“
“I was really loving the food here but its a little expensive. I was plan on returning often until I seen my bill and was charged $2.00 for a glass of water. It was not a bottle of water just tap water. It was a small glass of water and I have never paid so much for a glass of water to go with my order. So much for the yummy food!“
“Could not recommend this place enough. The atmosphere is so fun and the music kept both of my boys (2 & 4) dancing having fun the whole time we waited for our food! All the employees we encountered were very friendly. I had a strawberry basil margarita which was good but my husband had the Lola’s margarita which was just a plain margarita and we both agree the best margarita we’ve ever had. The chicken fajitas and steak tacos were outstanding! The owner was so nice and made sure our chips and salsa were always full and he surprised my boys with ice cream after we were done! Will definitely be back!“
“So so so good. The taco dinner was Al pastor and I finished the whole thing. My boyfriend had the Carne asada dinner and he also finished the whole thing. We had the mango and Italian margaritas which were made by our server and she was super nice! Overall the place was quiet but a hidden gem“
“Delicious Tamales! Ordered for a group at work and was pretty impressed. The people working were very kind. The tamales were fresh and flavorful and moist, especially the red pork tamales. Overall happy I found somewhere close so I don't have to drive to the city.“
“There is a similarly named place in another state, but they are not related (thanks, Cartman!). Either way, the food was perfect!Warm chips and a not-too-spicy salsa were delivered right away, and large quesadilla appetizers and steak tacos were just perfect! 10/10, would recommend!Parking: We parked for free in the Lake Street Parking Garage on a Saturday evening, which was a quick one-minute walk from the restaurant.“
“The owner is outstanding.Listens to the customer.I'm very helpful. We enjoyed a few very much.We had a great time there.I've had Several of my friends meet there for lunch. We enjoy that so much.My husband I go to eat sometimes. That she opened up Her her restaurant so we could hand out things. To people you need.“
“Being a Taco Bell super fan, I have been to quite a few Taco Bells in my time. This one however… is by far… the absolute best Taco Bell I’ve ever been to. At the very least it’s the best Taco Bell in Chicagoland. I mean that. The food is made with love here. You know what I mean. Orders are never messed up, the tacos are piled high neatly with ingredients, crunch wraps are stuffed, and the burritos are rolled neatly and tightly and grilled to perfection. It’s the kind of food you always hope for when you go to a Taco Bell but don’t often receive. Taco Bell employees are often pleasant and friendly and these employees are no exception. Except, I don’t think they’re fake smiles. I think they really mean them. Thanks, Lindenhurst Taco Bell. Keep it up.“
“No complaints whatsoever! My go to Mexican restaurant in Mundelein. Staff always friendly, food always delicious, guacamole always tastes fresh! I have never had a bad meal at this restaurant and I always leave fully satisfied. Five starts is not enough for this place. The food always exceeds my expectations and they have the best Horchata in town. I order and the food comes out no more than 5-10 minutes later.“
“I very much enjoyed the pupusas, sweet corn tamales, and corn atol. Prices were reasonable. The very clean dining area had amazing art. Great options for vegans and vegetarians and omnivores.Parking: On the side of the building and easily to spot and access.Kid-friendliness: Kind, patient, and accommodating to my kids and the food is not spicy.“
“Great location in Libertyville along with excellent taco choices (I like the Panza and Pastor tacos in particular.) I would also recommend the BBQ Chicken salad, very tasty fixings in a crunchy bowl to munch on as you eat.Parking: Street parking available as well as free lot and parking garage within easy walk.“
“El Barrio has been around longer than I have been alive. A family run restaurant that serves authentic and delicious Mexican food. The staff is experienced and friendly. Prices are reasonable and there is always room in the dining area. This is a gem of an establishment in the heart of a residential area. Their guacamole is some of the best around. Go and you will feel as if you are sitting in a barrio.“
“Amazing. The food is authentic; the meat not laced with a stupid amount of gristle. The spices are insanely good - you can TASTE the marinade they take the time to do.My friends and I ate there and it's pretty clear they do not have many dine-in customers. But we were tended to perfectly. An aside, a person in an electric wheel chair showed up and asked for a burrito in exchange for her name and phone number and a promise to pay. They didn't hesitate. My group and people from the kitchen came out offering to lift them into the restaurant . They declined but the kitchen made her her burrito.Perfect food. Perfect addition to a productive and caring society. They don't seem to get many dine-in customers but the experience was fantastic.I cannot recommend this place enough. A+, 10/10. Delicious food, sympathetic workers.“
“The food is great and consistent. Bathrooms are impeccable. The lady at the register made me feel like I was inconveniencing her when I came in as soon as they were open. It was deep exhales and no greeting. I said good morning twice before she even replied with a dry "hi". I will continue to get breakfast burritos here as they are the best I've had since moving here 24 years ago. But maybe appreciate your guests a tiny bit more?“
“Good food; good people and great service. What’s not to like? They give you a delicious soup as an appetizer- don’t skip it.Parking: Parking is right off the street; depending on day of the week or time of the day, it might be difficult to find a good spot but there is a parking lot in the back“
