“Dave's Dark Horse Tavern was a gem my wife and I found but had previously passed up because we thought it was a place connected in with the Red Roof Inn located near it. We decided to take a gamble and give them a visit anyway.Y'all this is the reason we live for gambles and so glad we did. This place was a hole in a wall with an AMAZING ambience, great group activities like darts and pool, live music, great bar selections, and CRAZY delicious food. Needless to say, we doubled back 2 nights in a row.My wife is vegan and I'm vegetarian so we have been pretty limited on places that serve anything but a veggie burger for us and typical sides around Starkville. When we took the menu into our hands and saw falafel, hummus, veggie burger, cauliflower buffalo wings, cauliflower buffalo wrap, veggie pizza, etc. They CLEARLY took the time to look out for their vegan and vegetarian crowd and not just grab veggie meat burgers and call it a win. They also have great desserts and drinks on brew and top shelf. The beignets were as the French would probably say - un petit bout de paradis .If you are in Starkville, do yourself a "flavor" and make this one of your stops for an experience and meal that definitely won't disappoint. ?️ #HappyEatingVegetarian options: Calzone, Buffalo Cauliflower (wings & wraps), Hummus, Falafel (alone or wrap), Fries, Cheese Fries, Queso, Quesadilla, Beignets, etcDietary restrictions: Gluten freeParking: Parking is shared with the Red Roof Inn customers so sometimes you will need to be parked in front of rooms - which may feel a little weird. I was a bit weirded out the first time but not so bad your second time around and so forth.“
“I recently visited Houston Grill House for dinner with a group of friends, and overall, it was a delightful experience. The restaurant is located in a convenient spot with ample parking available nearby. we were greeted warmly by the hostess who promptly seated us. The interior was clean and well-maintained, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu at Houston Grill House offered a diverse range of dishes, catering to different dietary preferences. While the majority of our meals were delicious, one person in our group expressed that their steak was slightly overcooked. It would be beneficial for the kitchen staff to pay a little more attention to ensuring the desired doneness of the meat. Houston Grill House left a positive impression on me. The restaurant's friendly and attentive staff, along with the delectable food options, make it a great choice for a night out with friends or a special occasion. I would gladly return to explore more of their enticing menu offerings.“
“I am starting my six months working at Ackerman as a contractor so this will be my first review in Mississippi. I will give them a 4.7. Their sweet potato cornbread was good, Since sweet potatoes I despise like I do Oysters and Black liquorice this is high praise. I took an order of Catfish Egg rolls for lunch tomorrow and tried one and it was outstanding. I had my usuaI Manhattan which was also very good. I had the Duck Burger it was not what I expected but it was very good. But the sauce was a tad too strong for my taste. The French Fries were very well seasoned. As far as the service it was completely outstanding. As in the Winter I rarely dress up and look like Captain Ahab and was hobbled by a rolled ankle, they treated me like I was King Charles. Finally for value it was exceptionally reasonable for this type of restaurant. It is certainly a place I would take my wife to when she visits.“
“I enjoyed Starkville Walk ons. Overall, I have no huge complaints. There was an easy seating/no wait even though it was busy on a Saturday evening. Ordered fried pickles as the appetizer, voodoo shrimp and grits w/cup of red beans and rice, and cajundilla and red beans and rice. Everything was delicious although I felt it could've been a bigger serving with the grits. Food came out quickly.. I personally am not fond of the dress attire (women with short skirts) and would be skeptical for this being a family place but I do realize it is a bar. However, I recommend this location.“
“I love Newks because the food is great, tasty, and quite different from anything you get elsewhere. The service is always friendly and efficient. There is no ridiculously loud music playing. You can actually carry on conversation while you eat, unlike dining at Peppers which I find painful.“
“Been wanting to try this for a couple of years. With it always being crowded and my vegetarian daughter having limited options, I finally was able to convince my son to go on Friday after the egg bowl. After a longer than expected wait, we ordered almost as soon as we sat down and the food arrived timely.I chose the Waffle Platter with Scrambled Eggs, Grits & Sausage. The waffle and sausage would have been plenty. I can see why they are known for their Duck Butter Syrup. It is definitely better than your typical maple syrup. The sausage was really good too! Eggs & grits were ok but I couldn't finish them.Service was typical of any local cafe, no frills but fast.I can see why there seems to always be a line out the door!“
“Best place to go when I need a night out of the house. Tuesdays are vinyl record night and tacos & margs are $2 ?Parking: I've never had trouble parking, even on busy nights.Kid-friendliness: This is a bar, so children are not allowed in almost all casesWheelchair accessibility: There are ramps up to any elevated areas and there is plenty of space to get wheelchairs through“
“The third place I tried during my tenure, working at Ackerman. The food was okay, I had a Panini patty melt, As they did not have the ability to make my Manhattan I had a Gin and tonic. It was good. Service was excellent. As far as value it was certainly very reasonable.“
“SO GOOD. Y’all, the fried chicken mac and cheese was better than it had any right to be. I will be dreaming of this mac and cheese until I come back to Starkville. The grilled Caesar salad was also delicious. The only thing that wasn’t a home run was the cocktails (they were just okay). I will order wine with my mac and cheese next time ??♀️ I will definitely be back!“
“I’ve been here several times and never had great service but a subpar average experience. However, the past 2 times I have come in with my friend, Earl, the experience has been off the charts. We had the same waitress both times and she made us feel like we were her only table when in fact, it looked as if she were serving most of the restaurant with the same high quality service. From now on I only want to come in when Aaron with an E is serving my table. Thank you so much for the experience!Happy Customer,Joey Robertson“
“We had a party of 13 this weekend at Restaurant Tyler and it went well. The highlights were the okra appetizer and the fresh fish of the day which was red snapper pan seared or blackened. We chose the pan seared. My son got the duck burger which we found the meat to be delicious but certainly didn't need a bun, was great as a stand-alone patty with the seasonings. The general consensus was that the main dishes were great but the sides were extremely over-salted. (And I am a salt lover!) The only reason I'm downgrading a star is that, like many restaurants in the downtown area in older buildings, the acoustics are horrible so that the restaurant is SO LOUD that it's nearly impossible to enjoy the atmosphere while screaming and not being able to communicate. There are things they can do to reduce the noise for a more pleasant experience.“
“Classic diner, overflowing with nostalgia, local pride, and people waiting (I did visit on a football gameday morning). Nice experience. I would bet the people at the tables next to me had been coming there for many decades. The "duck butter" syrup was a fun quirk.“
“Recommend by my daughter. I had a late lunch on my way to the library. I started with the artichoke dip appetizer. It was big enough for four people. Very good. Then I had the seafood special. Shrimp and grits with a spicy sauce. It was just what I needed. I'll be back.“
