Retro is a Polish restaurant with a cozy "retro" feel, featuring easy background music and LPs displayed behind the bar. The service is fantastic and friendly, with servers who are nice, patient, and answer questions. The space is small and fairly quiet on weekday evenings, so reservations are not a worry, and it seems to be open a bit later than most Polish restaurants in the neighborhood.
The food receives mixed feedback. A late-morning breakfast of a delicious omelet, salad, and perfectly-seasoned roasted potatoes was wonderful. The Polish Plate was enjoyed, with potato pancakes and pierogis as the stars. The burger was tasty, and the value for the price is great. The pierogi with duck were amazing, the Rueben was out of this world, and the sausage was great. The vegetarian stuffed cabbage, stuffed with kasha and veggies and smothered in mushroom sauce, was exciting to try, served with a small side salad and cucumber salad. However, a Saturday night visit brought disappointment: the confit au canard and the daily fish were dry and not as well seasoned. There is a proper bar with liquors made of ingredients never dreamed possible, and lots of weekly happy hours that extend till 9pm on Thursdays. A cappuccino with an artistic swirl made one think of Van Gogh. Bonus points for the retro poster in the bathroom.
