“As a lay-cook and scientist, there are certain ratios that you have to remember. H2O, Corn Starch and Water, and 80/20. I was walking out of my barbershop, and I heard a man describe another ratio of how he makes his burgers, and my mouth watered. This is how I received a card from the owner, Thomas. I hate that I lost it, but I remembered the ratio. When imagination and delusion hit, there is no greater feeling. The ambiance of the restaurant is a museum to its namesake. A table for small groups and high tops for smaller engagements. The menu tells you all you need to know. Multiple selections of burgers in any way that you can conjure. The patient and kind staff will tell you automatically, mix and match as long as you please. There is a menu for fries, let that sink in. My pictures will not do justice. My description is the remnants of a memory I wish to taste. A great burger is not only the meat, it is also the culmination of fresh ingredients. Tasting the fresh onion through the meat on a particular bite, it felt as if the slice was made specifically for this burger. The burger was delectably indescribable. I have had steaks that melted in my mouth on a medium cook, I order my burger well. This burger melted. No disgrace to the buns or the perfectly cooked fires, I would be here all day giving a dissertation on the anatomy of this experience. This is a reason to make your own, like you will make your burger.“

“Just make sure you have alternate plans! They can close an hour or more before their posted hours. Depends on how busy they are. I have even called and asked certain places what time they would close and they said 7 or 7:30. Went at 6:30 and they were closed. Not busy enough!“

The Goat Downtown is hands-down one of my favorite places in Greenville. The bartenders—Tiffany, Kristie, Heather, Jennifer, and Jenny—are truly amazing. They’re welcoming, attentive, and make everyone feel like a regular the second they walk in. Huge shoutout as well to Melvin, the owner, for creating such a genuine, inclusive space, and to the kitchen staff for consistently great food.

This bar is open to every culture, every kind of person, and treats every customer with respect and love. When I first moved downtown Greenville, The Goat became my safe space—a place where I felt comfortable, seen, and at home.

As for negative Google reviews: most of them honestly just reflect people who don’t understand bar culture. If you’re expecting Ritz-Carlton service at a bar & grill, downtown has plenty of other restaurants that might better fit that expectation. The Goat is exactly what it’s supposed to be—fun, welcoming, real, and full of good energy.

“All of the food was good, but only 6 cheese curds seems to be a bit small but they were good. The burger was one of the best I had in a long while and their sauce was really good. Not good enough to drink out of a cup with a straw but you could put it on everything type of good. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and I will definitely come back if I'm in the area!“

I live 20 min away and if I were to go to a Burger King I would happily drive all the way from Easley to this location. the staff is friendly, helpful, and irresistibly likeable. the entire staff went out of their way to help me with my order, cut up with small talk making me feel like a regular, and even went so far to help me out the door, seeing as my hands were full. this team is aces in my book.“
