The Smokehouse Lodge & Cabins Pet Friendly • $$
844 W Main St, Monteagle - 5.5 miles

“This is a cute, well-maintained, no-frills lodge-style motel. It’s not a re-vamped indie hotel, but stolidly in the motel vein. It has a cute pool out back and is surrounded by some trees, which gives it some charm.

The rooms are clean (though low-fi). There is coffee in the main lobby every morning—powder creamer, if that matters to you, as it does me. No breakfast.

Upsides: most of what you need is close to the motel (1 diner, 1 lunch market, 2 Mexican restaurants, Waffle House, a grocery store, gas stations). Within 10-20 minutes are stunningly gorgeous hikes with waterfalls and swimming holes (Fiery Gizzard State Park).

Downsides: don’t expect breakfast or reliable food at the restaurant on the property. It doesn’t do breakfast and is closed on various days/has varied hours each day.

If you’re coming for Bonnaroo, do not expect easy transportation back and forth and make sure that you secure a private transport company. This town has remarkably built zero infrastructure for the festival and, really, for the tourism that the surrounding areas must generate. You cannot rely on Uber/Lyft, though that seems to be on the horizon as Nashville drivers realize the festival is a cash cow.“

“Stopped in for dinner with family. We had grilled chicken, green beans, and onion rings. The green beans were excellent, and although the chicken was a little dry it had a good flavor. Our server was very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the live music and looking at all the vintage decor items. Would stop again.“

“Really cool hidden gem with an awesome atmosphere and live music. The second we walked in, the place had a fun, laid back vibe that made you want to stay awhile. The decor, lighting, and live band gave it a true local smokehouse/music venue feel and honestly that was the highlight of the night. You can tell this is a spot where locals come to relax, listen to music, and have a good time.

We ordered a variety of food including the pulled pork, fried sides, baked beans, cucumber salad, and dessert. The food was decent overall, but nothing really stood out as amazing or memorable. It wasn’t terrible just more average than expected considering how cool the place itself was. The homemade fried pie dessert was probably our favorite thing food-wise. The pulled pork had been sitting all day you could tell as it was dry and harden in a lot of places.

The biggest downside was the service. Our server was friendly when we did see her, but we felt pretty overlooked most of the evening and had long stretches without being checked on. Drinks and basic follow-up took longer than expected, especially since it wasn’t overly packed.

Even with that, we still enjoyed ourselves because the atmosphere and live music carried the experience. If you’re looking for a fun local spot with good vibes, cold drinks, and live entertainment, this place is definitely worth checking out. We’d come back again mainly for the music and overall experience hoping we have a better server.“
