“From start to finish, this spot was terrific. The shrimp cocktail was huge (8 pieces) which you don't typically get in a shrimp cocktail. The seabass I had was lovely - I was able to sub out the kimchi in my dish (not a fan) for wilted spinach and so much on the menu was gluten free which I 100% appreciate. Also, they brought a special dessert from their cafe downstairs just so I could have a GF Dessert option other than ice cream. But to me, most importantly, our server was delightful and attentive without being in your face (young blond gentleman). As a business owner, I appreciate great customer service!!! Thanks Bertie's for a great evening!!“

“This Cafe is truly a God send. not only do they serve delicious home-cooked Southern meals but they also bring respect and compassion to the table.compassion for all. here we all sit on the same table and eat a meal of our choosing meaning they allow you to choose which meal you would like to from two different already prepared meals then after you are seated a waiter brings you a tray with a variety of different desserts.( choose one), then let me tell you you've never tasted tea this good. so so refreshing. especially on a hot summer day. Refill?? Yes please.this Cafe is built within a house. the living room turned into a dining area, the kitchen was widened, library to the left then around the next corner another room turned into a dining area. upon arrival (depending what time you get there) you wait in line .(please do not block the door) choose your dish then choose your table and enjoy and yes! it's absolutely Free... the interior is very clean, not to crowded and after you are done eating the waiter or waitress will pickup after you and prepare the way for the next guest. the atmosphere here is no different than any upscale 5 star restaurant although I did enjoy my conversation here just a tad bit more. mainly cause they were rooted in kindness with compassion. there are restrooms, it is wheelchair accessible but no wifi and parking is rough but it's definitely worth the small thing we go through. I'm not exactly sure how the book part works ,maybe cause the meatballs in mashed potatoes had me savoring the taste😛 but if you so choose afterwards you can catch a seat on the wrap around porch or benches out back and strike up a great conversation as your food settles. I strongly recommend this Cafe to all who visit Waco remember Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m...enjoy“

“Excellent food and great atmosphere throughout the meal. Servers were on top of refills and check-ins without being intrusive — a balance that's harder to strike than it sounds. Clean place, comfortable seating, music at the right volume for actual conversation. Food itself was well-prepared and seasoned, portions generous for the price. Just a solid all-around dining experience and the kind of local restaurant that deserves repeat customers. Will absolutely be back soon and bringing more people.“
“One of the coolest spots in downtown Waco; Friendly knowledgeable bartenders, lots of custom ales from dark to hoppy to fruity- locally brewed. If you like beer, this is the place! They have fun activities like Music Bingo, Trivia, Live Music and more! Check out Waco Ale Co!“

“It was about 11:45 when my family went to eat. We were greeted and seated promptly. The server was training and was really nice. Our orders got to the table in great time and was delicious. Our orders were accurate and both servers brought refills before our glasses were empty. My family and I will return soon.“

“Have you ever been walking down the street and see a place that looks interesting? This evening my wife and I saw the doors and stepped in. No we didn’t have a reservation and beyond excited to see they had a single open table. I make it a habit to ask the waiter what they recommend and let them plan my meal. Coby led the journey this evening full of excellent choices. I highly recommend this place for a very romantic dinner of conversation with amazing food and even better staff. We will be back!“

“Spent 80 dollars eating crawfish. The crawfish was cooked to perfection as always. Only problem we had was we got about half crawfish the other half nothing but claws. They need to strain out those baskets good before adding more crawfish. Lots of small crawfish too. Not eating size. Other than that everything was good.“

“Edit...re-edit...when i go and my normal waitress is there, its great. If not, its getting worse. Steaks kinda tough, rolls are burnt, Service is off, almost your typical logans. When she is there, i dont know what happens but its like a different place. Do Not Get The Tenders, last trip reminded me of that chicken skin stuff you get at bucees. I'd say about a solid 4. In the past I've not had much luck at logans at other locations. But this one has been consistently pretty good. Fast service, good food (I've tried practically everything) really clean, staff is pretty good and what they do. The specials are what suck me in, and im really partial to the rolls. I'm not easily impressed and I tend to be brutally honest if a place isn't up to my standards, but this location particularly is pretty good. And to the owner...whatever your paying Christiana. Its not enough, im requesting her everytime I walk in the doors. A true professional at what she does. I'm not one to call out staff, but she deserves it.
👍👍“

“Tried the Philly cheesesteak sandwich from the plaid plate (food truck version of Squirrely’s Tavern) and I must say I was impressed. The sandwich was made fresh and the customer service was impeccable. If you happen to see the Plaid Plate out and about by Camp Fimfo, give it a try; you won’t be disappointed!“

“Want to thank the General Manager, Margaret Burch, for tracking me down to return a birthday card which included a check accidentally left there by a family member. I appreciated her going that extra mile to do the right thing. We have been to The Brown House Cafe several times over the summer and really enjoy the great service and excellent food. It’s worth the drive from Gatesville for some good home cooking. Thanks, Margaret!“

“The Hungry Man at Rene’s: A Morning Worth Waking For
There’s a quiet kind of honesty to breakfast at Rene’s Restaurant in Waco. It’s not trying to impress you — it’s trying to feed you. The booths are royal-blue and wooden, the tile floors shine like they’ve been mopped just after sunrise, and the walls hum with the gentle rhythm of a place that knows its regulars by heart. The coffee comes quick, black, and hot — not artisanal, not single-origin, just dependable and steady, like an old friend who doesn’t talk much but always shows up.
The Hungry Man plate arrives with a certain gravity — the kind that makes conversation stop for a second. Two eggs over medium, a golden-seared pork chop glistening with its own juices, a modest pile of potatoes cut thick enough to hold their softness, and a spread of creamy beans holding down the side of the plate. There’s a rhythm to it — protein, starch, salt, and heart. Everything feels intentional in its simplicity.
The pork chop steals the first glance. It’s got that perfect edge — crisp and browned where the pan kissed it hardest, yet still tender when the knife glides through. The flavor walks that fine Texas line between smoky and pure — no heavy marinade, no gimmick, just salt, pepper, and time. You can taste the care of a short-order cook who’s cooked a thousand breakfasts and still respects each one. It’s juicy enough to need a tortilla, and that’s where the next miracle happens.
Those homemade flour tortillas are soft-folded, still warm, with that faint aroma of toasted flour and a whisper of butter. They don’t compete with the food — they complete it. Tear one in half, scoop a little of the beans and egg, add a sliver of pork, and you’ve basically written your own love letter to the morning. The tortilla wraps the whole meal in a kind of grace — it’s the unspoken backbone of Tex-Mex breakfast.
The beans deserve their own paragraph. They’re creamy, not watery — that slow-cooked texture that tells you someone started them long before you woke up. The flavor is gentle, earthy, maybe even nostalgic. They blend effortlessly with the yolk from those over-medium eggs — that moment when the yolk breaks and runs into the beans feels like the sunrise of the plate itself.
Then there are the potatoes — perfectly golden, each one a miniature landscape of crisp edges and soft interiors. The cut is key here: thick enough to give you a bite, but not so large they lose the fry. They taste like patience. A little salt, maybe a touch of pepper, but mostly just balance — that sweet spot between breakfast and comfort food.
By the time you sip the last of your refilled coffee — now a little cooler, still serviceable — the place feels like home. The staff moves with the rhythm of people who care. Smiles aren’t forced. Cups are topped off before they’re empty. The tables gleam. The flow is calm. There’s a quiet pride in the service — the kind that reminds you this isn’t a franchise; it’s a family.
Rene’s doesn’t need to reinvent breakfast. It just needs to keep doing what it’s doing — pouring hot coffee, frying eggs right, crisping pork to that perfect shimmer, and reminding every traveler who passes through that a good morning isn’t something you buy; it’s something you’re served by people who love what they do.“
