This place is a perfect example of why automatic 20% gratuities should be rethought. While the bill was nearly $200, our waiter—who was rude, inattentive, and rarely around—still added a 20% tip. We were there celebrating a friend’s birthday, and the poor service made the experience all the more disappointing. After nearly 15 years in the service industry, I know that tips are earned, not guaranteed. This place clearly doesn’t share that standard.

With generous portions and vibrant presentation, El Rey Ballston is a solid spot for casual Mexican food. Guests appreciate the friendly service, although the acoustic can make the place noisy. Overall, El Rey Ballston is a great place to celebrate memorable moments.
