About Secret Congee

Secret Congee in Seattle is a popular spot for authentic and delicious congee. The restaurant offers hearty dishes like the classic chicken congee, which is a must-try, with the option to add spicy tom yum shrimp or substitute shrimp for crab. The tom yum shrimp congee with crispy fried dough is highly recommended. The atmosphere is cozy, with outdoor seating and heaters making it a comfortable place to enjoy a quiet breakfast or brunch. Despite its small size and limited seating, the food is served quickly and is very satisfying.

The food at Secret Congee is truly incredible, including special options like the Hokkaido scallops congee, which are fresh and firm. The restaurant’s unique broths and flavorful toppings set each dish apart, especially the wild boar and Chinese black olive congee, which is intentionally spicy and a little salty—perfect for mixing to your taste. The green tea adds a calming touch, enhancing the overall experience. This hidden gem in Ballard tends to be busy, but the quality and comforting flavors make it worth the wait. Overall, it is a great place for comforting, restorative congee in a cozy setting.

I ordered beef and kimchi congee. The bowl is decent size with generous amount of topping. However, the topping were just ok, they are not very savory. Additionally, the distance is a bit further away from other locations which make going to other places inconvenience. The food is decent but it’s not worth the drive for me.

Wonderful staff and they really figured out the essence of congee and they got it right. Definitely will be frequenting them more often now.
