“Ambiance here is fine. There is a smell that kinda hits you when you first walk in, like a mix of really old basement mixed with BO. The server/ bar back was kind and attentive. I had a good, strong Spanish coffee. The food is good (I've eaten here before). This time I had the chicken and waffles. The waffles are very good, fluffy and have great flavor. The chicken is heavily breaded and very crispy, but VERY salty. So much that my tongue burned when I was done eating. It's one of my neighborhood bars, so I'll be back, but do hope they can work on the smell.“

“German food can be enjoyable and this is a fun place to get some good dishes of that country. They have unique sides to go with the meal but all are well-made, I'd recommend either the fries or the spatzle especially. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the menu because the staff will be friendly and happy to answer any. Their menu is diverse, and you can try things from pretzels to German soup to different meats. Some dishes can be on the spendy side, but serving sizes are fair. The establishment is loud and casual but clean and still classy at the same time.“

“For sure this place is a hidden gem! Amazing food, small menu, fresh ever changing. Im not going to remove a star because I still love this place... however, they used to have the best cocktails ever!!! Like amazing came here almost every week to indulge. There bartender Tina left and now the cocktails are not worth spending the money on. Their name is wine and growl so I will have to shift to drinking wine here... although I can have wine at home but what I cant do at home is make those amazing speciality drinks.“

“Been here a couple times and I am consistently pleased with the service, value and quality. I’ve drank break side beers for a long time. Coming into their establishment it is so light and airy and welcoming. The staff is very friendly and the environment is lofty, airy and bright. Their beer fails to disappoint and each time I’ve come in the food is a perfect balance of pub food and class. Comfort dishes made with care. Their waffle fries are so nicely crisp on the outside with that smooth, mashed potato feel inside. The cubano was wonderful. Hard crust with soft, fall apart pork and crunchy house pickles with chipotle mayo for that subtle smoky heat. My partner ordered the beer and burger special and even a simple burger with a couple little add on was cooked well and seasoned properly. I could go on but I sure do enjoy coming here.“

Had no problem knocking clean a whole turkey reuben and coke.Could sit and digest before heading out, even when it got busy. Noticed almost everyone else had ordered reubens too. ?*Worked at a restaurant in Florida for some years and folks loved our reubens, but they don't come close to these. ✅“

“Our son decided to take the family here, for one of the adults' birthday! This will be the first time, we've heard of this restaurant, to be honest. There were six of us eating here for the first time, ages 6-73. I call this a Tapas-style restaurant because almost everything was meant for sharing. Starting of course with a large fondue, with a steaming urn of hot melted cheese. The fondue came with a nice variety of sausages, vegetables and bread, and thinly slices of apples. Other things we shared were the Schnitzel, smoked trout, Bavarian pretzel, golden beets, and the burger Alpina which was served with fries. For desert we had the flourless chocolate cake and panna cotta. Between us we did have a glass of wine, a couple cocktails and an IPA. This is a gastro pub and the drinks menu is extensive. All of the food items were delicious and as described on the menu. Service was friendly and appropriately paced. The bathrooms are clean. Our youngest, conversed easily and both were polite to our waiter, who understands children! Bonus point for him.“

Ground Breaker Brewing and Gastropub Brewery • $$
2030 SE 7th Ave, Portland

“Wonderful food, decent beer, rustic atmosphere. My partner is gluten free so just the fact that everything at Ground Breaker is GF meant we had to check it out.We had a flight of beer, tried a Papusa, and had chicken strips and fish and chips. The food was top notch, all hot and very fresh. So good! And the beer was fun to try, but just not to my preference. Still fine. The reason for 4 over 5 stars is that I like a little more service. This place is minimal, you need a phone to order... no menus, you scan the QR code. And you gotta go to the bar to order a beer. Bus your own table. Pay on your phone. Get your own fork and napkins, and water. The employees were nice. Just be ready for this kind of do it yourself set up when you go.“

“I don't think it is possible to create a more Portland vibe bar than the Loyal Legion. A mix of an old world beer hall and a modern neighborhood pub, the Loyal Legion is a great spot for a happy hour get together with coworkers or a relaxed evening nosh with family and friends. The selection of beers is - well, mind blowing. I think they may have the finest selection of draft beers in the city. Not a beer drinker? Never fear, they offer cocktails, ciders and a number of other adult beverages. The staff are all Portland super cool and very friendly and helpful. Ask for a beer recommendation and you are most assuredly going to get a great cerveza. The food selection is also geared toward easy, relaxed bar eats. Good burgers, fries, and tater tots. Add an order of sweet potato fries and you can even convince yourself you're eating healthy. They have a fried cauliflower appetizer that makes even the dreaded white vegetable edible.“

“Alberta Pub in the King area of Portland is a cornered watering hole hangout hosting a raucous of a party until the wee hours of the morning. My daughter wanted to kickstart our Sunday as she'd gotten wind of Alberta P's Soulful Sundays lineup a while back and suggested we come during my short solo visit to Portland. Alberta P. has a dim, cozy feel with the bar area+stools and other tables around. My kid and I were here for the live music the next room over. This room has high stools, slender counters on opposite side and several hi-top tables front of the stage- with cymbals, decorating the walls. Grab a cocktail and settle in. The owner seems to be a legend in these parts who has been hosting and supporting the local live jazzy+Soulful Sundays music scene for a while. Come here if you wanna listen and jive to musicians zhuzh up famous jazzy and soul tunes. The Sunday my kid and I visited, the live band improvised their own schtick- but it also felt sloppy as the main singers ate up a bulk of the time stretching out the songs. At times, it felt and looked like they were cackling. Despite this, the singers had a powerful voice-especially the guy. My daughter and I ended our evening on a high note in a dimly lit venue while a live band tinkled out sets of jazzy+ soulful tunes until late. Come with an open mind and you'll leave with your senses bedazzled in some fun- but interesting way.“

“TL;DRCleanse the whole building of Mandarin Palace vibes as much as possible and make improvements to dining areas more visible upon entrance.Make your menu stand out somehow against your nearby competitors. Three burger spots (Bville, MidCity, Silver Birch) in one block is just not going to help the underdog in this case. This is going to require better (more expensive) kitchen staff and more expensive meals like steak.Get your name out there somehow, someway, once you have something that will leave an impression on newcomers and old fans of MP. Most people who drive by think it's still the old restaurant. This place is trying to turn around a restaurant that was undeniably disgusting. Seriously, Mandarin Pal was some of the worst Chinese food I've had every single time someone ordered it for takeout, and dining in just felt creepy. It's way too big of a building and very closed off inside. The location and reputation of the old restaurant is going to make it really difficult for the new owners to put "Silver Birch Kitchen" in peoples heads especially when there are multiple other locations (Sports Page, Dublin, Dugout) nearby that have established reputations and are way more lively. You might notice how other reviews and this one haven't mentioned the actual restaurant part of the huge building. That's because when you walk in, you can't see it, just a lobby in the middle of renovation that's still majorly Mandarin Palace vibes. It's kind of jarring, but I see the potential in where the owner wants this place to go. Renovating the aesthetic (opening up walls) of the entire restaurant would be extremely refreshing to the eyes, especially if the overall design made it not still feel like a dingy cheap spot.I'm going to take a guess that the bar is the only thing keeping this place afloat right now, and maybe their takeout. The problem with their takeout is that it's American food, half of which is burger variations. Burgerville is right next door, and again, the previously mentioned locations are already known to have decent American food. Mandarin Palace only survived because it was cheap, fast, and the only nearby Chinese food. The bar is the heart of this place, especially the bartenders and regulars that just make it feel welcoming. Opposite the restaurant, I don't think they should actually change much here. Yes, it's a little worn and divey, but not in an off-putting or obnoxious way. It feels like you're in a truly local neighborhood spot to hang out and not be overwhelmed. Maybe some new paint and a couple of renovations to match what they plan to do for the restaurant side, but I think it largely works as is.Uptown beer is 100% pulling in a lot of their daytime customers, and I see that getting even worse as the weather warms because they have that Portland outdoor vibe and amazing smash burgers that are easily the best on that blockI hope this place turns out, they have the space to make it really fun and a nice slightly upscale sit-down restaurant for the whole neighborhood, with a small but cozy bar to hangout in then walk home from on the trail. These are their main advantages and should be leveraged.“

“I organized a dinner in the patio area for 23 guests. The management at Produce Row was wonderful and the atmosphere was perfect - they had 3 picnic tables set up for us when we arrived, and it open-air and quiet enough for us to hear each other. The picnic tables made it easy for folks to move around and catch up with different folks throughout the dinner. If you are looking for a great open-air venue near the convention center for a larger group (or a smaller group), I highly recommend Produce Row! The food was really good (something for everyone) and the service was great, too. I highly recommend the Produce Bowl!“
