Julia's Restaurant offers an elegant dining experience in a charming, historic building that transports guests to a vintage era of sophistication. The restaurant is situated on the second floor of Berkeley's City Club, a structure originally designed by Julia Morgan for a women's club or YWCA, now a quaint hotel and UC Berkeley campus club. The ambiance is inviting, with woodsy details, high ceilings, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The space features tables further apart than most restaurants, making conversation easy and comfortable. The service is friendly and attentive; the waiter remembered a special occasion and even offered to make a dessert extra special without being asked.
The menu offers a good range of approachable dishes with attention to detail. Standout meals include the Nicoise salad, which is generous with extra avocados and grilled tuna, and the quiche with vibrant spinach and a rich, light custard filling served in a flaky pastry shell. The tuna is seared just enough to be sashimi perfect, coated with toasted black and white sesame seeds. The quiche is considered one of the best in recent memory. The restaurant's food, beautiful table settings, and lovely atmosphere, combined with top-notch service, create a memorable experience. The drinks and desserts, such as vanilla crème brûlée, are also highly praised.
