JOE'S PIZZA: A Dispatch from New Canaan

There is a particular pleasure, gentlemen, in a restaurant that refuses to be scheduled. Joe's Pizza, on Locust Avenue since 1967, does not keep a reliable calendar — you pass by, you notice the lights are on, and you understand this as an invitation not to be declined twice.

The place was opened by Neapolitan immigrants Giuseppe and Annunziata Colella, and it remains in the family's hands under their son Lorenzo. There is no design concept at work here, no curated atmosphere — only five decades of unbroken craft, the kind that quietly earns a town's loyalty rather than announcing itself for it.

The pie itself is worth the detour. I arrived expecting the familiar New York fold — thin, pliant, gone in two bites. Joe's builds something with more conviction: a thicker crust that holds its shape under its own weight, crisped to a snap that suggests coal even where none is used. It is the mark of a kitchen that has learned to earn its char through patience rather than equipment — closer in spirit to the heavier hand of a Bronx pizzeria than the delicate fold of a downtown slice shop.

The proof of a place done right is simple: I don't wait for the drive home. A slice or two disappears standing at the counter, still too hot to be sensible, before the rest of the pie ever reaches the car.

Verdict: Five stars, without hesitation. The hours are inconvenient by design, or perhaps by nature — either way, it's part of the charm. Catch it open, eat standing up, and take the rest with you. This is what a neighborhood pizzeria is meant to be.“

“The black forest cake was delicious. Well worth the visit for my wife's favorite cake in her birthday. I ordered about a day in advance. There was a slight wait when I picked up in the morning. It was the perfect excuse to treat myself to coffee and pastries.“

“Randomly stopped at this place to eat and oh my god am I glad I did. I got myself a chicken shawarma. Tender moist chicken with amazing sauces and veggies all wrapped in crispy fresh bread. This was the proper Lebanese food that people talk about. The whole time I was there the guy at counter kept asking customers if everything was OK. “Sat at bar with a friend. We received our order which was fine. But once we were done the bartender did not clear off our dirty dishes from the bar. We pushed them to the side and in front of us and she just ignored them. So instead of ordering a desert we just decided to leave. Food was good service was horrible. Plus, a lot of the employees just hung at the end of the bar and talked. What a shame.“

“Mom and Pop bagel place. Awesome tasting bagels for a very reasonable price. Place gets very busy. We stopped by around 930am and had to wait about 20 minutes for our food. But, It was worth it. Fresh bagels were being made as we waited. It was cool to see the baking process.“

“Great little sandwich counter. Was looking for a quick sandwich stopped and got an amazing Chicken Salad with Tomato, Lettuce, Cheese and Olives. All fresh. The chicken salad had some amazing flavor. Perfect amount of mayonnaise. Staff was very friendly and had a homestyle kitchen vibe.“

So I went in and did two things I would not ordinarily do. Ordered a delicious latte and a pastry!! The guy who took my order was sweet and had perfect recommendations. “Came here back in December. Loved it! Room was very nice with a nice view of the atrium. The atrium is awesome! Makes you feel like you’re in California or Florida! I do wish the restaurant and gazebo bar were open. But the food we got from room service was really good and were still able to eat in the atrium. But you should definitely consider re-opening the restaurant and gazebo bar, why haven’t you re-opened it since COVID? The indoor pool is really nice with a hot tub! Overall, love this place and still would come back again even though the restaurant and gazebo bar are closed because it’s so nice!“
