“Bar Vida is for sure my favorite smoothie/juice place in the Fairfield County area! I highly recommend their Malibu smoothie which is strawberry-based (I usually add peanut butter to mine) and their immunity juices/shots which are cold-pressed and homemade with lemon, ginger, cayenne pepper, and apple. Once you have Bar Vida it's hard to go back to any other smoothie/juice place!”

The atmosphere really sets this restaurant apart. It’s elegant and polished while still feeling comfortable and inviting. You can tell there is a tremendous amount of attention to detail throughout the entire experience.

From the moment we arrived until we left, everything felt seamless. Great food, excellent hospitality, beautiful atmosphere, and a team that clearly cares about their guests. Definitely a place I’ll be returning to and recommending to friends and family. Five stars across the board.”

JOE'S PIZZA: A Dispatch from New Canaan

There is a particular pleasure, gentlemen, in a restaurant that refuses to be scheduled. Joe's Pizza, on Locust Avenue since 1967, does not keep a reliable calendar — you pass by, you notice the lights are on, and you understand this as an invitation not to be declined twice.

The place was opened by Neapolitan immigrants Giuseppe and Annunziata Colella, and it remains in the family's hands under their son Lorenzo. There is no design concept at work here, no curated atmosphere — only five decades of unbroken craft, the kind that quietly earns a town's loyalty rather than announcing itself for it.

The pie itself is worth the detour. I arrived expecting the familiar New York fold — thin, pliant, gone in two bites. Joe's builds something with more conviction: a thicker crust that holds its shape under its own weight, crisped to a snap that suggests coal even where none is used. It is the mark of a kitchen that has learned to earn its char through patience rather than equipment — closer in spirit to the heavier hand of a Bronx pizzeria than the delicate fold of a downtown slice shop.

The proof of a place done right is simple: I don't wait for the drive home. A slice or two disappears standing at the counter, still too hot to be sensible, before the rest of the pie ever reaches the car.

Verdict: Five stars, without hesitation. The hours are inconvenient by design, or perhaps by nature — either way, it's part of the charm. Catch it open, eat standing up, and take the rest with you. This is what a neighborhood pizzeria is meant to be.”

“We were recommended to Dolce restaurant by a relative who used to live in the area and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is rustic and classic. From the time we walked in the door, the service was extraordinary. We were seated right away and we received the perfect amount of attention throughout the entire meal. One diner had the tuna tar tar as an appetizer and he said it was the best he's ever had. For dinner we had the chicken Francaise and the Dolce salad. They both had generous portions and were absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes and spinach sides were just as good as the entree. We would highly recommend this restaurant. Our waitress Jillian was amazing and had a lovely personality. Delicious food, great ambiance all for a fair price.”

“Wow, I never thought I’d live to see the day when I’d taste something so delightful! At 82 years old, I walked into Gofer Ice Cream, unsure what to expect. My good friend Andrew liebau insisted I try a “banana split”—said I’d been missing out all my life. Well, I’ll be darned if he wasn’t right.

The handsome young man behind the counter was patient as I squinted at the flavors, though I had no idea what “cookie dough” or “rocky road” meant. In the end, I picked vanilla—simple, safe. But the moment that first spoonful melted on my tongue, I understood why folks go on about this treat. It was creamy, sweet, and softer than I imagined, like a little cloud of happiness.

I sat by the window, savoring every bite, watching children run by with their cones dripping in the sun. Maybe I waited too long to have ice cream, but I can tell you this—it won’t be my last time. Five stars, with all the joy of a new discovery”
