My only issue is that whenever I order poke, it always seems like they are out of ingredients, and I find myself not ordering exactly what I wanted because I have to substitute so many things. Even at times and days of the week when you’d think they wouldn’t be that busy, it seems like there is always something that they are running out of here. I understand that in having so many different options in one place, it can be difficult to keep ingredients in stock, but oftentimes the amount of food that they do not offer on certain days is very disappointing.“

JOE'S PIZZA: A Dispatch from New Canaan

There is a particular pleasure, gentlemen, in a restaurant that refuses to be scheduled. Joe's Pizza, on Locust Avenue since 1967, does not keep a reliable calendar — you pass by, you notice the lights are on, and you understand this as an invitation not to be declined twice.

The place was opened by Neapolitan immigrants Giuseppe and Annunziata Colella, and it remains in the family's hands under their son Lorenzo. There is no design concept at work here, no curated atmosphere — only five decades of unbroken craft, the kind that quietly earns a town's loyalty rather than announcing itself for it.

The pie itself is worth the detour. I arrived expecting the familiar New York fold — thin, pliant, gone in two bites. Joe's builds something with more conviction: a thicker crust that holds its shape under its own weight, crisped to a snap that suggests coal even where none is used. It is the mark of a kitchen that has learned to earn its char through patience rather than equipment — closer in spirit to the heavier hand of a Bronx pizzeria than the delicate fold of a downtown slice shop.

The proof of a place done right is simple: I don't wait for the drive home. A slice or two disappears standing at the counter, still too hot to be sensible, before the rest of the pie ever reaches the car.

Verdict: Five stars, without hesitation. The hours are inconvenient by design, or perhaps by nature — either way, it's part of the charm. Catch it open, eat standing up, and take the rest with you. This is what a neighborhood pizzeria is meant to be.“

“I left an emotional review the other day when my online pizza order was incorrect- user error apparently, I don’t know how to remove it, so I wanted to give an update. The OWNER of the business took time out of his day to come to my house to explain and apologize for the mistake. I guess I clicked on the cheese on 1/2, when I thought it was extra cheese (as it was a large cheese pizza). Honest mistake for the pizza maker who also answered the phone and was a bit overwhelmed but a very sure housewife, asking why the pizza was naked, w an angry 6yr old asking me “how could this happen??? I looooove Bronx house…” Drama. So, I take it back- and am so happy we can keep ordering from this establishment. My kid loves the pizza, and it’s super quick and conveniently located by the hockey rink… lesson learned, just call. Us dinosaurs are no good at online ordering.“

“We had a craving for a good meatball parm hero and Michael's did not disappoint. Most Italian sandwich shops in Stamford close at 7pm. A lot of The Stamford pizza shops dont do sandwiches. And if they do they arent very good.

Well we hit the motherload with Michael's. Not only was the MB Parm realllly good, But so was the pizza. It reminded us of the old school pizza in NYC. Great flavor and a nice thin crust. The wings had a really good flavor but could have been a bit crisper. And the Calzone was awesome, a bit too much cheese (if that's a thing lol) but really good. And made to order which is spectacular
But whats even better than great food is great service. And here they give 1000% and make u feel like family. Tina and her brother (i'm sorry I forgot your name) were amazing hosts and ensured that we will be back. Ate the pizza and wings too fast to take pics. Lol“

“We walked in without a reservation, having no idea of the supper club event that was going on. John went out of his way to make sure we got a seat without having the reservation which nearly seemed impossible based on the hopping crowd. He and his exceptional chefs and waitstaff presented to us an incredible variety of tastings—from savory dishes, to comfort dishes, to refreshing dishes—we were eager for the next dish to come, that’s how delicious it all was. We will be back repeatedly, it is so worth the drive. On a personal note, from us to John, thank you so much for making a point to say goodbye to us as you were leaving. It was a small gesture that meant a lot to us. You’re so personable it’s no wonder you’re a success :)

“I’ve been eating here on occasion since I was 14 years old. Little Nicks is a staple of Norwalk. The food is fantastic and fresh, offering great variety to get exactly what you want. You can get a single slice of pizza, or a full pie in 3 different sizes and can customize by going half and half to make the whole family happy. They offer an excellent variety of pasta and they make everything practically right in front of you. The menu is more of a suggestion of what they make often as they encourage mixing and matching things to your preference. There is limited time specials posted outside the front door so going in person is recommended. Only inconvenience is that they can sometimes make large pizzas a tad too large, to the point where the crust gets slightly bent by the box (Womp Womp).“

Cafeteria ambience and restricted parking and the only two downsides. I don't downgrade for that, but it's not the most romantic first date. I will go back to Johns every time I come to Stamford!
