Kula Shave Ice is a shave ice business located on the road to and from Akaka Falls in Honomu, with a second location conveniently next to the Hilo Farmers' Market. It is head and shoulders above the rest, considered the best of the best and far and above others. The shop is charming and clean.

Instead of commercial syrups, Kula Shave Ice uses real fruit syrups that they make themselves with real fruits and cane sugar. You can definitely taste the difference; the natural and truly tropical flavors are incredible and delicious. You feel the crunch of little strawberry seeds and see the pulp of the fruits. The haupia (coconut) cream is amazing. A popular choice is "The Hapa," which consists of coconut syrup shave ice over locally-made chocolate ice cream, topped with a chocolate shell and coconut shavings. The shave ice is super fluffy with a very fine texture, melts in the mouth, and is served in a bowl, not a paper cone.

The service is excellent, fast, friendly, efficient, and kind. The staff are wonderful, warm, welcoming, and beautiful. Portions are amazing, with clear examples of keiki and regular sizes shown. It is a cool spot and a must-stop, adding something special to a trip after visiting Akaka Falls. The treats are the most memorable shave ice, and you can't go wrong with any combination.
