“We went with our Burger Club to Lucky Burgers (a.k.a. Jelly Cafe after dark or 4pm, whichever comes first).

Jelly Cafe is a breakfast and lunch place open 7am until 2pm. Then they switch over to Lucky Burgers which is open from 4pm until no one is there and they want to go home. Though technically I think they’re open until 8 or 9pm.

There are a handful of items on the Lucky Burgers’ menu: about 5 variations of their classic burger, a chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, and waffle fries.

When we went, the place was empty and never got busy. Which opened the door for one of the owners, Scott, to regale us with tales of days gone by from his childhood in Evanston and the famous people he knew, grew up with, and worked with. It was nice hearing these stories and it was nice to give Scott something and somebodies to talk to as well.

The place has a large parking lot and is nice and clean on the inside. There is a tiny area with slot machines and a small bar/counter at the entrance.

The burgers are all smashburgers. They come as singles or double patties. Go for the double as there’s not a whole lot of meat once they’re smashed. The differences are the toppings. Scott recommends their housemade dijonaise sauce which is good, but ask for it on the side. The cook slathers it on the burger and that’s all you can taste. Once I scooped (you read that correctly) the sauce off my burger, it was a pretty good burger. The meat is seasoned well and cooked nicely and the bun holds up (despite dripping in dijonaise).

We all shared the chicken tenders as an appetizer. Five nice sized tenders come in the meal and you can choose your dipping sauce. Scott recommended their honey mustard which was very good and the ranch wasn’t bad either.

He is also johnny-on-the-spot to refill fill your drinks. I seriously thought that I would float away.

The best part is the price. All said and done for a burger, waffle fries, and a soda, with tax and tip is like $15-$18 bucks.

“Dined in on Labor Day and everything was ok. Two days later I placed an online order, the crew on site weren't even aware that my order was placed until 4 minutes AFTER I ARRIVED. I ordered 2 sandwiches (1 chicken and one burger), 2 fries and 2 drinks and a side of coleslaw. Got home and I had 1 chicken sandwich, one fry, one coleslaw and 2 drinks... where's the burger and other fry? I called them up, the employee who answered took 7 minutes of blabbering before offering a refund for the missing items. 1 week later and I have yet to receive my refund. Good to know that Slaw Burger engages in theft.“

“Outstanding. Saw a post on Insta and happened to be cruising through Palatine so I decided to form my own opinion. I’m certainly glad I stopped. Everything was on point. Burger was so good. I’m not normally down with waffle fries but these were great. Nice and crispy and the seasoning wasn’t over powering. I also did the Oreo shake because why not! I will definitely be coming back cuz I’m curious how the chicken sandwich is. Seriously a great smash burger and worth the money imo. Staff was great, friendly and upbeat. “I've been here three times in the past year and have been wowed each time. The employees are always nice and accommodating. The food is perfect each time, the bathrooms and restaurant itself are very clean, and the space is welcoming! “From 4pm to 10pm this is Lucky Burgers. Earlier in the day, it is the Jelly Cafe from 7am to 2pm serving breakfast items. We went for dinner and both had the Smash Burger. We liked them and planning on going back. Dinner menu is limited, and the slot machines are busy.“

“I ordered a small request of chicken tenders and cheese curds (that's it!!) And it took almost 30 minutes for them to get it to me. So much for fast food. The worst part was I ordered takeout, so by the time I got home, both the chicken and the curds were cold. But every other time has been no problem, with really good food.
