“Nicky’s Hot Dog is a must-visit spot if you’re in the Hotel Central area for a business trip. I arrived around 11:00 am, and while foot traffic was light, parking was still scarce, possibly due to sharing with a neighboring business. The place is tiny and old, with no updates to the exterior or interior, but that’s not why you’re there. I skipped the namesake hot dog and went straight for the Italian beef sandwich.

They used to be cash-only, but now they accept major cards, which was a relief since I don’t carry cash. The workers are packed into the minuscule kitchen like sardines, but ordering is straightforward. Just tell the guy at the counter what you want, and he writes it down on paper. A couple of minutes later, your order is ready.

There’s nothing fancy about Nicky’s, so if that’s what you’re after, head to a major chain. I ordered a beef sandwich with fries and an RC Cola for around $14. The sandwich came wrapped in foil and paper, with the bottom half soaked in beef juice. The beef was perfect, the bread was soft, and the hot peppers were just right. The sandwich was delicious and paired perfectly with the golden fries and cola. I’m so glad these places still exist, and I have much respect for the workers who move at warp speed to handle the orders, especially as it got jam-packed as soon as I left.“

“Old school hot dog and sandwhich place. Taking a point off the dog for the missing poppy seed bun. Taking another point off because it is missing tomato (sign indicated this so I knew what I was getting). But adding a point cause the fries are legit. Is it my top dog ? No. But very tasty dog at a good value and a quality place by owners grinding out a living and for that, much respect.“

“When I'm in Chicago I always have to have an Italian beef. This time I wanted something that wasn't a big chain and I stumbled on Bob O's. Man this place was awesome. The Italian beef was tremendous as well as the meatball sub and char dog. Even the fries were great. The portions for the price were tremendous. Absolutely killer place!!!“

“Stopped by for a quick lunch after grocery shopping. My friend ordered the Saturday special—the Super Burger, a massive ½‑lb burger served with fries. I wasn’t as hungry, so I went with the patty melt instead.

The Super Burger lived up to its name and was topped with grilled onions and mozzarella cheese. My patty melt was spot on: crispy bread and a perfect burger‑to‑grilled‑onions ratio. I also grabbed a large fountain drink, and refills were $1.

The interior has been recently updated, and they’re clearly making good use of the space, including a half‑booth facing the window. The booths were comfortable, making it an easy place to sit and enjoy lunch.“

“Don't let the overall look of this place fool you It might seem like an out of place small almost empty restaurant right next to the sidewalk, But the food is delicious, Very friendly staff of 2 at the moment. I seen they had fresh cut fries and there's nothing like a good fresh cut fry so I figured I'd give them a shot! Man I was not disappointed at all, I ordered 2 hot dogs and fries and I gotta say the but dogs are better than portillo's and the fries are off the charts! It cost me about 12.00 for 2 hot dogs and 2 fries the price is as good as the food! My first time here and will definitely not be my last. “Although I don't live nearby, this place caught my eye online so I thought I would try it. They have both hot dogs and fancier haute dogs. I opted for the former with all the condiments, fries and onion rings. The service was friendly and prompt and all the food good. The seating is limited but if you get a seat, there's lots of natural light and when I was there, the Grateful Dead were playing which just added to the ambiance of a suburban location.“

There are terminals you can order from, and while I was putting in my order, a staffer suggested their Maxwell Street hot dog (prepped by the amazing Oumar) - their only grilled offering! - and I couldn't resist. She was friendly and I went along with it.

Worth a visit if you're craving a hot dog and have a layover.
