I go at least once a month and stock up on treats which I then freeze to have on hand and its so worth the money and the drive. “We often order the chicken and rice soup, and the quality seems to vary from time to time. Sometimes the carrots and vegetables are quite hard and cut into very large pieces, and the broth is a bit watery, which makes it difficult for our kids to enjoy. On other days, however, the broth is rich and the ingredients are cut into comfortable sizes, and the kids eat it with great pleasure. When it’s made that way, it’s really delicious. We just hope the quality can be a bit more consistent.“

Over that time, I’ve become very aware of the differences in ingredients and food quality between Europe and the U.S. When I come back each year to visit family, I often find that a lot of American food leaves me feeling bloated and uncomfortable, likely due to additives, dyes, and lower-quality ingredients that I’m no longer used to.

Blue Moon Bagel Cafe is the one wonderful exception.

I’ve been coming here since high school, and it’s the place I genuinely look forward to eating when I’m back in town. I truly trust their ingredients: the food tastes fresh, clean, and well made, and it doesn’t leave me with that heavy, uncomfortable feeling I get elsewhere. The sandwiches are delicious, everything feels thoughtfully prepared, and the staff is consistently friendly and welcoming. Prices are also quite reasonable for the area, especially considering current inflation in the US.

I’ll admit that some of the desserts are total sugar bombs—but that’s probably just my now very European palate talking! For those who love a sweet treat, they’re clearly doing something right.
